Steering Wheel Shake since 6 Miles on my 20' Off-Road Premium!

How about this? Go test drive a new 4runner in your dealers inventory. Does is shake? If NO, then install those tires and wheels on your 4runner, drive it. If it shakes, its not the tires. If it is smooth, then you have a tire issue.

I have SCS wheels with Falken AT3 275/70/17's and everything is Super smooth. 2018 TRDOR with 13K

So a follow up on mine.....spent a good part of the day at the dealer today. Test drove 2 ‘20 SR5’s with the same wheels and tires as mine....1 had the shake and 1 didn’t.

Tech drove both the ‘20’s and mine to confirm. They took the wheels/tires from the one ‘20 that had no shake and put them on mine and guess what? NO SHAKE!!!

They believe it to be a bad batch of SR5 wheels.

SO....let’s hope this solves the problem. Hope this helps others!

Many many times, it's actually the wheels. Many cheaply made cast wheels due to how the mold is cast results in irregularities. They can put them on a tire balancer and never show any wobble, however the spotted weight can throw it off more than a wheel weight can compensate for. People can blame it on tires, but a lot of the time it's just shotty wheels. You don't get much of these issues with forged wheels. Once in a while, you'll get a crappy cast wheel.

Just bought a 2020 Black Metallic Off-Road Premium last Friday with 6 miles. Currently at 350 or so. Since I left the lot I have had steering wheel tremble at around 60 to 65 MPH. Took in Monday to have assessed. No big deal right wheel weights were off on three of four wheels. I figured may have fallen off in transit to dealer or test drive etc. Well I picked up and have been driving and now its back again! Has anyone experienced any issues like this? Wondering if it's a bad tire. My truck came with the Dunlop's. One of my buddies who is a Toyota Tech mentioned a local recall on some models with the Wrangler's but I have yet to hear anything on the Dunlop's.



I love my truck, but kind of crazy to have these issues with so few miles. Thoughts? :sobbing:

Picked up mine last Monday (venture ed with trd wheels) very light vibration at 60-65mph. It was resolved by rebalancing the front 2 tires.

If they are still using those AT20 dunlops take them off and put them in the trash. Worst tires I have ever had. 2 new Tacomas and my 4Runner came with them. Every time they weren't on the vehicle for long. My 11 was a CPO and it had a brand new set on it when I bought it. I had a new set of General Grabber ATX's sitting on the loading dock before I took delivery of the truck. About the only good thing about those tires is they are quiet.

Anyone wanting to ditch the Dunlops may check with Discount Tire- I took my 2 day old 19 TRDORP in to get a quote on putting on KO2's. They gave me $100 credit for each of the Dunlops- so $500 off the new KO2's.

Steering wheel vibes

Mine does the same thing at 55-60 mph. Did fine after a tire rebalance and rotatable for about a month. It’s happening again. I try and stay above or below 55 or 60 otherwise. I am not concerned about it and I am not going through a rebalance every couple of months. The 4Runner goes off-road and I drive over lots of those traffic bumps.

New '19 TRDORP. Test drove 3 before I got in one that didn't shake or wander. Scared the sales rep to death during the test drives. Coming up on 5K now and it's smooth. Got about 250 miles off road on pretty rough beach during a 10-day vacation. Was expecting that to trigger some issues but it didn't. I know it's a pain, but you paid good money for that 4R. Get the dealer to listen to you. Have your sales rep help you. Document all of it. Be civil and make them make you happy. BTW, they tried to tell me that the "soft tires sitting so long in the lot" was the culprit. They know there's a problem. They have to wait on Toyota to tell 'em what to say and do. Put it in 4WD and enjoy the ride. That's why you bought it, right?

Update: I brought in today because I couldn’t take it anymore. Was told there was a bulletin released the day I took in for service stating select 4runners with the Dunlop’s like mine need to be brought in. I think it’s something more serious because the dealer service rep said a master tech has to look at it. I’m keeping all of my paperwork in case things get ugly.

Post the documentation with what they state is the issue and solution. Let me take a look and see if I can help.

Any correspondences that occur over the phone or in person are fine, you should however request it also be written. Usually insisting that they email you with a breakdown of the conversation had earlier will suffice. Be sure to reiterate your concerns, echo their solutions and key points, and keep an organized roll of said emails.

I read about this before I bought so made a point of a test drive requiring 60mph. 1st test drive shook. salesman said it was the road. They had an identical runner that I drove next, same road, same speed and was smooth as silk. salesman didn't know what to say but I bought the one that didn't shake

I also drove several. With KDSS, without. SR5. ORP. PRO. Limited. I chose the one that didn't feel like it was all over the place.

And then there are others of us who never experience this. My 2019 TRDOR has been smooth as glass since I bought it 40,000 miles ago. Original tires, all pavement miles. Crazy.

My 2019 OR is smooth driving as well. I really hope I never have this problem.

4Runners and Tacomas just seem to be really sensitive to wheel balance. On my 2017, I had to get my BFG KO2s balanced 4 times before the truck was even driveable and I would still get a slight steering wheel shimmy from 50-60 mph. When I got my current Coopers, I spoke with the tech and made sure that the tires with the worst RoadForce numbers went on the back and that made a huge difference - I still get a slight shimmy when the truck has been sitting all night and its really cold the next morning, but for the most part it's gone.

At new I had no shakes or wobble, after the 5k service I noticed a little bit between 60-65 mph but bearable. After my 10k service it went away, this tells me that I have a tire issue. Will be swapping them out pretty soon for some Falkens when these wear out.

I had a little wheel shake or vibration on certain road surfaces at first on my ‘19 ORP. It pretty much went away after around 3,000 miles. It’s always in the back of my mind that it could come back but so far so good. Like others mentioned it was in the 55 to 60 mph range.

If its in the 55-60mph range then I don't really care since I'm blowing through that range to 75 or I drive around town under 45. I currently don't have any shake.

Update: My truck has to be diagnosed by the regional Toyota rep to clarify it's the tires before they will do anything. The last time I went in they got rid of most of the shake. At this point I would take a credit and go buy the KO2's. Corona has screwed scheduling up so probably going to be a little bit before this is resolved. I love the truck aside from the shake and the occasional radio glitching. I asked about warranties on the radio and was basically told it's only covered if the service tech can replicate it when in for service... what a joke. Owned Toyota's for most of my driving years and I have to say I am extremely disheartened with the level of quality Toyota has stooped too. hwell:

Also want to add that it's extremely alarming how many others have this issue. (Yes I know there are some unicorns out there who don't have this issue.) But after doing some research on this forum and others, I found hundreds of people with similar issues. Most cases from what I have seen end up in Toyota doing little to nothing. Those that really pressed the issue seem to have eventually gotten tires replaced. I hate Toyota isn't acknowledging this a serious issue even if it isn't directly causing people harm.

Same issue here at 60-65. The dealer was worthless and was made aware of the issue when I bought it. I ended up just buying new tires and for the most part it is ok now. Good luck and document everything / get it in writing!
