Just wanted to share the latest development with my 4runner. Went to a different dealership this time around and to my surprise I was met by the shop foreman - guessing the fact I had started a case with Toyota might have had something to do with that. We took it for a spin and he confirmed the vibration. They kept it overnight and I just picked it up. According to him once they road force balanced the tires and checked the alignment the vibration was still there. They went ahead and swapped the wheels and tires from a brand new 4runner to mine and the vibration was gone. After that, according to him, they inspected my tires more closely and found one to be out of round/slipped belt. They replaced it with a new one and the vibration was gone.
The foreman also said he has a Trail and has had the same issue and believed it was the tires causing it.
I just drove for about 20 miles on the highway. While it's not completely gone, the shimmy is definitely a lot better than what it was and I can live with it as long as it stays that way. Thankful for the dealership acknowledging the issue and not giving me the "it's a characteristic of the vehicle" crap.

Shakes between 58 - 64 mph
I bought a 2017 sr5 premium with 1 mile on it in January of 2017. Around 5000 miles I noticed a shake but it was only once In a while. Told the dealership at my 10000 mile service they stayed they could not feel it and rotated and balanced the tires an alignment was done and everything in spec. It continued to shake and by the 15000 service they again told me it was in my head. I went in for the 20000 service they stated they balanced the tires and rotated but could not feel a shake. Maybe it was a flat spot in my tire from setting overnight ect. Since April I have had the tires balanced 3 times and 2 alignments done all 4 tires are chopped on the inside and my alignment is stating with in Toyota specs I am afraid of spending a $1000 on new tires just for it to continue doing the same thing. The steering wheel shake has gotten so bad I am ready to trade my dream vehicle in for another non Toyota suv. I will not go back to the dealer I purchased from as they are very rude and keep dismissing the problem.

I've been experiencing the same issue since new. It's been 20k miles now, and I've had the wheels balanced 4 times, rotated at least twice, and still get that shimmy between 60-65 mph.
As we speak, my dealer is ripping apart my 4R, replacing the entire steering rack, tire rods, and checking my TRD wheels for imperfections. And I'm sure another rebalance for kicks. Hopefully this takes care of things.

Had same issue with a Tacoma. After chasing imaginary mechanical issues, It ended up being defective tires (OM Michelins)

RPM v Speed
I have had similar issues - some of the things that helped pin it down were:
Vibrates where: - flat road, up hill, down hill, all grades ?
Speed: What range does it come into play and is there a high end where it flattens out ?
RPM : Will it do it at the same speed - but in a different gear ? ( drive train vs. rotating vibration )
I played with it enough to nail it down and noted it it all in writing. It sure helped the folks working on it. The more info known the better. In my case - bad tires and bad balance.

The dealer test drove my 4R with both my TRD Wheels/KO2s and with a stock wheel/tire set. The shaking happened with both.

I have been fighting this problem ever since i put on SCS Ray 10's. Vibration between 60-65. I took it in to Discount tire and they road forced balanced all 4 tires The issue went away for about a week. Yesterday I decided to rotate just the driver side front to back to see if I could narrow it down to a tire/wheel or if it is somehow suspension related. After rotating just the driver side, issue gone. So in my case (assuming the vibration does not come back in a week or so) seems to be related to a single tire/wheel. I am going to rotate the passenger side in a few days and see if that changes anything. Not sure if my experience helps or makes troubleshooting this issue more difficult....

I too had the vibration at 55-65mph and took it to Les Schwab. Usually I shy away from Scwab but earlier in this thread someone had mentioned going to a shop that had a certain wheel balancer brand and they were it. They force balanced it and took care of the shimmy...props to Les on this one. They even said they couldn't take care of the entire problem and gave me 1/2 off.
K02's with 18"wheels and 2"lift.

just bought a 19 xp 4x4 shake at 55 to 60 has 450 miles on it back at dealer now.

update, dealer has unit 3 days wouldn't force balance out, to out of round, ordered 4 new GY duratracs , has onl 400 miles on it , I drove it before buying but not enough , I traded a 2016 that drove perfect.
Which location did you take it to?

1- had original Dunlops and took it on a trip from NY to MI in June 2012 don't remember any shimmy issues
2- replaced dunlops with kumho 51 AT's in fall ...... hello vibration
3- 2013 replaced kumhos with Michelin LTX AT2's vibration still there.....rebalancing.....scuffed my rims , resurfaced , painted the rims for free since the apes at the dealership are.....well....apes.....shimmy still there....messed around with tire pressures kinda helped ... shimmy would come back.....sucked it up and excepted it
4- last week looking at the sidewalls of the LTX's cracks that have been getting worse I purchased a full set (including a spare, tires at $212 each) BF Goodrich all terrain ta ko2's 265 70/17...... 4 days later..... hello Mr. Vibration it's been a long 4 day vacation.....back so soon ???!!!!

Just tested brand new 2019 SR5 premium, all fine at speeds under 60 mph. Hit 70mph on interstate and vibration was so bad that even the salesman said, there is something wrong there. We tested another one on the same route and pretty similar shake.
How the f*€% can Toyota get away with this shity steering shake straight from the factory.
Needles to say, this has definitely turned me off from purchasing a 4runner.

I needed a Road Force Balance
Hi Everyone, I don't have the solution to this problem for everyone, but I wanted to relay my experience in case it's useful:
I have a lifted 2015 SR5. I bought some new Dean Backcountry SQ4 AT tires (275/70/17). Got them mounted on my stock SR5 wheels at my local Big O Tires, and driving was smooth across all speeds. Bought a used set of Fuel Hostage 17x9 wheels on Craigslist. Used Big O to swap the tires from my old wheels to my new wheels. Steering wheel vibration was rough at 50+ MPG (especially between 50 - 60). Took it back to Big O, and they said the tire wheel combos were calling for a lot of weight to be added on some wheels (up to 19 ounces on one). Based on this, they put balance bags in the tires, said that should do the trick and sent me on my way. The vibration was still there. They told me to give it a day to let the bags settle in. The day did nothing for the problem. I got in touch with the guy that sold me the wheels on Craigslist, and he said he got a Road Force balance from Toytec when he got tires mounted and never had an issue with vibration. I asked Big O about getting a Road Force balance, and they said it may help, but based on the weight being called for, there's probably something more wrong with the wheel / tire combo. They also said they didn't have the equipment to do a Road Force balance. With that, I took my car to Discount Tire who does have the Road Force equipment. They charged me $25 / tire, told me the previous balance job on the tires was horrible, and confirmed that the Road Force balance machine was reading zero for each wheel tire after the balance so I should be good. I've been driving on them for two days since the Road Force balance, and the vibrations are GONE. Not sure how long the balance will hold up. For those having the vibration issue that haven't tried a road force balance, but have tried multiple tires and or wheels, it may be the problem is the shop (even dealership) you are using isn't properly skilled or equipped to solve the problem. I would say take your 4runner to a shop that has a road force balance setup, and get that service performed. The output readings with the balance should give you the confidence that the tires are properly balanced and should run smoothly. If you get out on the road after with proper balance readings from the road force balance and still have the shake, well, Toyota's got some explaining to do.

Didn't want to start another thread for a common issue. I didn't have any issues with the steering wheel vibrations until after I swapped new wheels to existing tires. Before the new wheels, I didn't have any vibrations/shakes. When they put the tires onto my new wheels, they marked each corner and put it back on the same corner. Again, no issues. It wasn't until I did a tire rotation so I'm assuming it's a balancing issue.
My question is...if I left it alone, is there anything to worry about or is this just annoying? I do have a steel bumper with winch and I can see it wobbling with the steering wheel shake.
