Steering Wheel vibration

My 2020 4R Premium 4x4 came with about 50 psi in the tires. When I aired them down to 32 psi (door sticker) it had a slight wiggle at 60-65 mph. When I aired them up to 34 psi, in a few miles they are usually about 37 psi, no wiggle.

It was the wheel bearings that were defective......we also upgraded to Michelin’s which are smoother......the 4 runner is a 2020 SR5 premium....hope it helps!

Do you still have a shake-free steering wheel with the new wheel bearings? I have the Michelins as well, but still have a terrible wiggle in the steering wheel. Adding a lift, switching tires, and switching rims this week. I assume the issue will get worse, but if replacing the bearings fixes the issue, I'll have the dealer do that as well. 2015 Trail Premium

be sure to have it road force balanced by someone who knows what theyre doing (if possible). If you still have vibrations or shimmy after a roadforce balance with low RF numbers, dont rule out the LCA bushings. if you have been wheeling hard, this may be the culprit. My issues disappeared as soon as i went to aftermarket control arms.

I just did a 100 mile trip going well above 65 the entire time over last weekend and no vibrations. I can't figure out what causes it. Hopefully there is a solution.

could be flatspotting of the tires if the vehicle has been sitting a while prior to the trip
 
This is an old TSB but may be worth a look. Balance with a finger plate adapter.

The Haweka Flange Plate uses the wheel lug holes and a centering cone to center the wheel on
the balancer arbor. As the wing nut is tightened, equal pressure is automatically applied to each
stud forcing the wheel to perfectly mount on the balancer

every shop i've mentioned/showed this to, including a toyota dealer, looked at me like i was retarded.
 
Me too. Only two shops I've ever spoken do knew what it was, neither were Toyota dealers. However, It's better than going back 5x. It worked wonders for my 3rd gen shake.

Haven't had any steering wheel shake in a 4th or 5th gen so haven't need to mention it. If your shake is persistent, it's worth asking about.

And if you get the tires to balance well (no shake), don't mess with them again.

Im getting new tires next month (buy 3 get 1 free). The flange plate will not be mentioned unless I get the shake.
 
My setup:

2017 TRD Pro
Falken Wildpeak SL 285/70/17
Stock TRD Pro (SEMA) wheels
ColorLugs Lug covers
SpiderTraxx spacers (torqued to 85ftlb, never removed since installation)

I used to have really bad steering wheel vibration but I've noticed no shake since doing a couple things:

> Removing all old residual adhesive from old wheel weights using Goo Gone from inner wheels.

> Hand tightening all lug nuts and locks in star pattern. Then tightening after lowering wheels on ground to 76ftlb in star pattern. (I used to torque to 85ftlb)
 
Steering Shake

2021 Toyota 4Runner Venture with TRD wheels. Car had 5 miles on it when I bought new yesterday. On the way hone at speeds over 55 there is significant steering vibration. If I put cruise control on and take my hands off wheel the vehicle moves to the right regardless of which lane I’m in. This is without any brake pressure. Spent all day at dealer rebalancing to no avail.
This is the 4th 4Runner I have had (05, 10, 15 & now 21). Never had a problem and put lots of miles on each one 250k on last one.
Should I call it a lemon and try to move on to something else??? Dealers are in very low inventory or no inventory of 4Runners.
 
I believe this is happening to more of us than what is reporting on the forums and it’s clear there is some issue which needs to be addressed by Toyota. The more of us that file complaints with their corporate office and government perhaps it will get their attention. People shouldn’t have to go changing numerous tires, wheels, and go to different dealers to resolve an issue like this. It’s unacceptable especially all the newer 4runners that are reporting this issue. Just my two cents.

The trucks come with 50 psi in the tires to reduce flat spots during shipping and sitting in a dealer lot. My dealer didnt air down the tires before I picked up the truck. Have you tried airing up the tires to a higher than specified on the door pressure and driving it around to get rid of the flat spots? I keep my tires around 34-37psi because at 32 they have flat spots, if the truck has sat for a few days, when I drive way and it takes a few miles for the mild vibration to go away.

You could also call Tire Rack and ask them who their best installer is in your area and take it over there for a rebalancing

I had 0 issues my lifted (Eibach Pro Lift) on SCS 17x8.5 -10 on 275s with no steering wheel vibration but as soon as I rotated my tires, I immediately noticed steering wheel vibration going 50-60.

It's strange how just doing my tire rotation caused this. You guys recommend me getting a Road Force balance and basically the shop who mounted my tires did a shitty job?
 
not the end all solution but

I have found that if the wheels are put on by hand rather than with impact wrench, and torqued on the ground I have much less shake than if dealer/shop does what they want to where you cant see how they do it.
Local tire shop does my rotations and road force balance and once they started doing it in front of me by hand and torque on the ground, I get less vibes.
Read here sometime ago about tightening one all the way causes wheel to "lean to that bolt" kind of thing.

Had dealer do alignment recently and balance with the hoka adapter but they must have impacted them on as I have a good deal of vibration now.

Search this side for steering wheel shake, highway shimmy, and all those similar terms. You'll find out theories and solutions.

Chances are you'll fix it for good, but also chances are you'll either always have them or they will come and go. It's quite a widespread matter. Any decent tire shop will be aware of it with Toyotas, but not all might have tools to properly balance. It's one of those things with 4Runners, where it affects many and there could me many reasons for the issue. I just live with minor shimmies now.
 
unfortunately a really consistent theme I had hoped would be permanently in the rearview mirror, and remains the number one reason I won't buy one. We're all wired uniquely and this kind of problem is just inexcusable and HIGHLY annoying. Score for Gen 4. my 07 rolls smoother than my lexus or sequoia despite trying hard on those 2

Are y’all holding your dealer techs hostage and making them re-rebalance wheel+tires when that may not be the actual problem?

Sounds like some people have had enough return trips they could lemon law the vehicle, but I don’t think that’s what we want. We don’t want to get rid of a curse of a truck, we want one thing to go away.

There has to be someone who can do further A-B testing.

1.) Will your wheels+tires make another Toyota do the same thing?

2.) Will another set of wheels+tires make YOUR Toyota do the same thing?

3.) I don’t think this is a dealer balance machine issue because some people have visited 3rd party tire shops and it is not resolved. The dealer/shop would have lots of bad reviews for the same issue, across all vehicle brands, if the machine was not balancing tires right.

4.) Lastly if we eliminate all of the above, it comes down to these trucks shipping with the alignments that, while “in spec”, ALLOW road vibrations to run amok and ruin the ride.

Yes, I’m going to repeat it until we see some results: we need more positive caster than aligning to factory spec gives you. Think of the 4Runner as a shopping cart - glides and turns really smooth until it hits the tiniest bump then the front wheels want to spin all the way around!

We want each front wheel caster angle to be more like a bicycle. Yes, you might lose a little wheel well clearance as it’s going to take the front wheels a little “forward” towards the front bumper, but it should make for more stable, “locked down” ride.

IFS rigs aren't really prone to death wobble you'd see with SFA; mostly people -- including myself -- feel the out of balance wobble. You're correct in what you're suggesting, though I'll say there are far more variables than that. LCA bushings, road conditions and even settings on the alignment machine. For example, I've had good results when techs turn off "smart balance" on the Hunter machines.
 
Steering wheel shimmy/vibration in our vehicles is due to tires. No ifs or buts.

As long as there is more than 15 lbs of road force (which is calculated based on runout and heavy spots on the tire) you will get shimmy/vibrations for sure. No amount of re-balancing will help. You need to keep trying different tires until you get one that has less than 15 lbs of road force to cure it.

After going thru numerous tires to find ones with less than 15 lbs of road force, no more shimmies anymore. I've even had non-road force balances after than and still no shimmies.

From my experience:
10 lbs or less - extremely smooth and 100% vibration free.

15 lbs - borderline, minor vibrations will come and go.

20+ lbs - severe vibrations, forget trying to balance it, time to get a new tire.

The Haweka adapter will help apply force on the lugs as if it was mounted on the vehicle. The misconception is the Haweka adapter is used because our wheels is lug centric. Our wheels are actually hub centric.
