Steering Wheel Volume Controls

Has anyone had any success installing steering wheel buttons to control an aftermarket stereo? Volume, skip songs etc.

I searched but was only able to locate where the steering wheel was replaced but not much detail regarding the controls. I constantly find myself messing with the volume and always reach for the buttons I used to have on my previous car.

Is it possible without soldering the wires directly into the head unit internals? Any ideas?

The unit I have installed is a Pioneer SPH DA 120 Double Din 6.2"

Well I always assumed you could get a steering wheel from a 4th gen that has the controls, trace the wires or find a wiring diagram that shows what wires do what, then buy the steering wheel controls adapter for your headunit and make a wiring harness that goes from the headunit to the steering wheel and it would work, but you'd also have to figure out the airbag and not let it blow up in your face. Good idea, but not worth the time and effort IMO most likely. I wish mine had it, but I won't go to any crazy extremes to get it.

Yah, that seems to be the easiest way to do it. Then you gota replace the whole steering wheel. I was just hoping to add the controls to avoid messing with the airbag.

I'm not too good with wiring but I'm assuming this is the wiring for the back-end to hookup some kind of steering controls. The part I don't understand is what is he wiring up to, to control it? I think he is leaving that part out for the user to decide. From the comments people are making little tiny boards with some buttons that are right by their hands so they don't have to reach for the actual radio. For us that'd be somewhere near the arm rest?
 
I have a kenwood DNX892 and it can't connect or even after market steering controls. Did 6 months of hard research before going that way so if you get a kenwood, just remember you can't do steering controls or odb2 connections and reading. Now I know supposedly another series will work,but I prefer this style and I use my remote so I'm good :)
 
There's a thread about swapping in Lexus steering wheels with stereo controls in them. There aren't any how-to details regarding the stereo controls, but you could contact the OP of that thread for more info.

The airbag is easy. It's plug and play with many of them.
 
I think pioneer sells nav capable headunits that have optional steering wheel control, might even be Bluetooth.
 
This isn't easy to do.

The clockspring in the steering wheel isn't designed for it. You can't just run a wire down the steering column, it has to go through the clockspring.

You MIGHT be able to make it work if you can find a clockspring from another Toyota or Lexus that's the same size and has conductors for audio controls.

And be careful screwing around with that thing or you'll end up like this::biggrin1:

Great info, and thanks for the links. This might be the way to go without tearing into the wheel. Wireless FTW.
 
No problem, remote with phone function is available in Europe only (SR110) in USA is only radio control model (SR100).
I order it from German via ebay

LOL, that's what I was going to say. My Sony ES HU from 2003 came with a wired remote to attach anywhere you like. So did my 2006 Pioneer Premier HU that I had in my '01 Corolla. I would assume new HU's would have Blue Tooth ones now.

However, what if you are using your phone to play music via Bluetooth. No remote function?
 
I love my Bluetooth. Ever since I got my headunit I never used a CD. No reason. I simply connect my phone through Bluetooth and listen to whatever. Pandora, YouTube .... ( if you have jail broken iPhone, you can get unlimited skips and no ads for Pandora ). Quality of music is very good on Bluetooth.

This is the pioneer steering wheel remote. The volume control is on backside of the remote. My dad has one in his minivan. I can take few pics if interested? And it's easily removable so you can use it as hand held.

It's been out for years. Nothing new. Most headunits are capable of having the steering wheel remote. But it has to be compatible. And usually bought seperatley. However most headunits come with a regular remote. Hand held.

Don't bother reading Amazon reviews. Bunch of idiots buy wrong stuff and complain. My dad has had one on his steering wheel for 5 years same battery still working. For AVIC-n3
