Stereo/Nav unit

Hi everyone, long time reader first time poster. :hello:

Today I jumped on a good deal purchasing a 2010 Trail Edition. I've been on the lookout for one specifically with no navigation (I simply have no use for it and really dislike them in general). The model I got has the nav unit w/ JBL audio... I've seen this done the opposite way, but I'm looking to remove the unit and replace it with the factory stereo/CD unit... Does anyone have any advice on this, or if it is even possible and how I should go about doing it? I searched around and haven't seen it done this way, if I missed something feel free to point me in the right direction...

Wiring harness is different between JBL and Non JBL trucks.It is not a plug and play. Best bet for you if you don't like/want/need the JBL nav is to buy a aftermarket stereo without nav.. They make a adapter wiring harness to cross the factory JBL wiring to the aftermarket and they sell dash kits like Metra's to fit any size aftermarket stereo.

I sold my factory JBL nav unit on Ebay for $800 and you can buy like a really nice Pioneer non nav Double Din stereo and kit to fit the dash for around $400.

So based on Harper's e-mail, you can make $400 cash and end up with a good aftermarket radio.

OR...Try the JBL unit out for a while...you might like it after all. Even if you don't use the Nav part of it, it's nice to have it there in a pinch and the JBL stereo is pretty nice. You can always set the screen so that it doesn't kick over to the Nav screen unless you want it to and instead enjoy the large screen for the phone features and the audio display. Just a thought.

you would be out of your mind to replace the JBL with the base Toyota stereo. out. of. your. mind.

definitely go with an aftermarket HU and sell your JBL. or, like Scuba said, give the JBL a shot. it's imperfect, but mine has served me well... bluetooth audio streaming, voice control, big backup cam... not so terrible.

Thanks everyone for your feedback. I shall stick with it for awhile until I find a solution. The idea is not to replace the JBL audio... I was under the impression that there is a factory unit that supports JBL.

I have a Limited JBL Non-Nav. I decided to get it w/o Nav at the time of purchase to save some money. I wonder if the JBL Nav from the Trail would fit exactly in the hole left if I took out my Non-Nav, and vice-versa for your truck? It seems like it would and you would not need any fit kits--just take the factory kit from each truck and swap them. Since both systems are JBL, the wiring harnesses should be the same. Even though the Trail doesn't have dual-zone climate, all those buttons are below the Nav unit anyway and it won't matter.

You might be right, but I'd recommend double checking that. I seem to remember other members stating that even the Nav / non-nav JBLs had different harnesses. Not 100% sure though.

You may very well be right. I was just thinking about my backup camera. Since I don't have nav, it is in the mirror, so I wonder if the wiring harness for JBL-NAV has a spot for the camera... Bluetooth Mic and all the other stuff should be the same...

There is a factory Nav unit for sale on eBay. The guy says it will even work for non-JBL if you buy the JBL amp.

The large display also makes a nice backup camera monitor..

$1600+ ??!! :jaw drop: Really??? Although I am perfectly happy with my factory Nav, there is no way I'd pay that to install a used one. Wow.

Yeah, that's why it's still for sale. It's a $1,400 option when building a Toyota. According to the parts catalog, the unit is $4,600.

I'm curious to see if JBL Nav and JBL non nav would work now too. You are both in Texas so maybe you could get together to do the swap. Problems you might run in too is the nav one has a GPS Antenna up in the dash and as mentioned the camera leads will be different.Not sure if the sepparate JBL amps are the same but I have pics of that too if you need it.

I cant believe they are asking $1600+ for one on ebay and he's actually had 4 offers.He's correct that the amp is separate and you would need that but leaves out that you would have to wire it too as they don't sell just that harness.

Here are pics of the back of the JBL NAV and connectors from mine when I took it out.I have pics of the non nav from a TE too as Paul sent them to see if they would match up for plug and play.No dice and none of them matched up.You would need to take pics of the JBL Non nav .

Sweet, thanks for the pics Harper. I'll take mine apart and take pics and post them so we all can compare. The sticky on the forum for taking everything off is money.

I didn't think about the GPS antenna. I always assumed the shark fin on top had the XM, GPS, and Safety Connect built in.

hey Scuba. Quick...and probably a stupid question. I am in the same boat. Hate the NAV on my JBL. How do I set it to not go back to the MAP display? And stay on stereo or phone display. thanks much

Under the Display settings there is a an option for it NOT to return to the map.

Easy fix. Hit your main settings button, then select "general", then turn the "auto screen change" from on to off.

That keeps the Nav system available when you need it, but doesn't show you the map if it annoys you.
