Okay guys, this is my first post so I hope I'm posting in the appropriate forum.

I recently purchased a 2003 4-Runner Limited and am very displeased with the sound system. I was wanting to upgrade my system and possibly add a sub, but did not want to jeopardize any cargo space. Who on here has upgraded their sound system and can point me in the right direction?

I almost feel like my stereo is not pushing enough wattage to my speakers. Suggestions?

Okay, this is a silly question probably, but do I call JL direct or does someone know of a sales rep they would refer? I live in Bham, AL area, but travel pretty much all over the state.
 
Tell us about your 4runner, does it have factory JBL system? What sound are you looking for. Look at Crutchfield.com.

If you have the factory JBL system, you can add an 8" JL like many of us have done.
 
You might want to look into the Infinity Basslink for the subwoofer portion. It's a built in sub/amp combo, and I'm pretty pleased with it. I'm coming off of a JL 8w7 that was truly awesome (and I've had various subs over the past 6-7 years), and I wasn't disappointed at all with the Infinity, which should really say something. It's got a minimal footprint if mounted vertically, which would help satisfy your requirement of preserving cargo space (at least, somewhat). It can be had for $173 shipped from Amazon.

If you have the JBL sound sytem, though, you could reuse the enclosure that's in there and upgrade the sub and amp without taking up any cargo space at all.

It seems that you may not know a whole lot about sound systems, so Crutchfield would be a great place to start. Their website will be able to tell you what fits and they'll supply the mounting brackets, wiring, etc for free, as well as installation instructions. You could also go to a local car audio shop and talk to them about outfitting your car. The audio forum here is another good place to start, as is the CarAudio forum and DIY Mobile Audio forum.

Edit: I'll also add that upgrading your headunit is a great first step to upgrading your sound system. If you do have the JBL system, your speakers should already be pretty decent and a new head unit may help bring them to life.
 
Thank you for the responses. I don't know much at all about systems these day. I have the navigation head unit with a single disc cd player. I have 9,10,11 or so JL synthesis (?) speakers. The treble is pretty loud, but there is zero bass in this car. I'm coming from a 2002 Nissan Altima which had a Bose system in it where the bass was way above average. Now, I'm not looking for people to hear me beating while I'm coming down the street, but I do enjoy enough bass where you can feel the music. I'm going to research the ideas you guys have given me and go from there. Thank you again for all of your input and please continue to share ideas.

You said you bought an 8" JL subwoofer to replace the one that is the back hatch area? Did you add an amplifier to add more wattage? I really feel this may be the main issue to my problem. Just curious what some of you have done in this regard.
 
i have an '04 sr5 with jbl 10 speaker system what would happen if i replaced the stock amp with a nicer one? how much would it improve the sound? what specs would i need to run the speakers without too much changing wires? thanks
