The Costco near us only had 10-30W Mobil 1. Manual calls for 5-30W. Forget the 10-30 and stick to 5-30W? (This month, one of the local auto parts stores -- Advance -- has a "Mobil 1 oil change special" listed for $29.88. "Buy 5 Quarts of MOBIL 1 Synthetic Motor Oil, High Mileage Synthetic or Extended Performance Synthetic AND a MOBIL 1 Oil Filter.") Any experience with Mobil 1 filters? Our V8 has 36,500 miles.
Stick to 5-30W?

i run castrol high mileage 5w30 with a mobile 1 oil filter and i have no problems ( knock on wood). i have 192xxx on my 96 so i don't know if that makes any difference.

I say 96runner4x4 makes perhaps the most compelling arguement for 5w-30, 192xxx miles and no issues.
The big problem with 10w-30 is on startup the thicker oil could leave vital components and surfaces starved for lubrication for a longer time casusing wear.

Recently I filled up with 0w-30 from Mobile 1. The reason for the 5w-20 is better fuel economy and increased flow at startup. I doubt it actually has anything to do with tight clearances.
My '05 manual says that 10w-30 is okay, but change back to 5w-30 at the next oil change, or of course the service bulettin advice to use 5w-20.

My point was more about going too far the other way and not as focused on the 10w-30 question as I should've been. In the old days people would use 20w-50 or add STP in the summer or after 100K. The tolerances in the new engines are so tight and new oils are so good that even a 5w-20 works well. The tolerances in engines, especially the in valvetrain, have gotten much tighter in the 90's and 00's.
IMHO 10w-30 in a newer T4R in warm climate or with very high mileage is probably fine. 5w-30 is probably the best answer. If I lived somewhere that the temps dipped below 30F I'd be uncomfortable using 10w-30 regularly. And I didn't state all of that earlier :bash:
If I lived in a cooler climate I would consider the 0w-30 as you chose.

I ran 10W30 in my 1993 V6 pickup and all was fine in hot and super cold temps, Mobil One and Pennzoil Platinum Full Synthetics. The manual called for 10W30.
In my 2007 V8 4Runner, I only run 5W-30 Pennzoil Platinum full synthetic.
That's the weight fill at Toyota and in the manual and no sense running anything 'thicker/heavier'.
When I switched from the 5W-30 Quaker State regular oil to full synthetic, the highway MPG went up 1.5 MPG's.

This debate can get tired quickly. My take is to follow the owner's manual and everything would be fine.
I tried the 0w-30 because its supposed to improve startup wear and fuel economy. But before I plunked down the coin, I made sure that it won't void a warranty, which you can find on the label, among other places.
