I would love to hear a review for the Maverick from a Toyota owner. It's on our list of potential vehicles in a couple years. We need a truck, sometimes, but not a full-size - especially if I can do some mods so that the Maverick can haul lumber and sheets of ply.
If not in general discussions, perhaps in the off-topic forum.
Same!! I have a neighbor that has one and I like it!!
Honestly, I am on the fence. I have a Lariat with the Lux package. My total vehicle cost was $33K. MSRP 35.8. I ordered it in September of last year for one of my employees. I got tired of waiting so I purchased him a nicely equipped Escape with the same options. MSRP on the escape was higher, but ford was discounting the escape plus 0% financing and I need to put him in a vehicle with better fuel economy. Fast forward 4 months my Maverick comes in.
I have quite a few vehicles from a Ram 3500 Limited and BMW, etc. The Maverick has features I can't find on any vehicle in this price point. Lane centering vs lane assist for example. The BMW has the lane centering and it's awesome. The Lane assist on the Jeep and ram are OK, but nothing compared to the Ford/BMW setup. The adaptive cruise is what I really like. From that perspective, the Maverick is an amazing value. It has all the features of a much more expensive vehicle. The truck drives
very quiet for a "cheap" vehicle.
My only complaint is the lack of bed space I guess. For a work vehicle I would rather see a smaller rear seat and a longer bed. For a personal vehicle I think the back space has quite a bit of room. The truck is longer than the my 4th Gen. Almost 200" long and the 4R 20" shorter. From that perspective I can't figure out where the length is. I think the rear cargo area of the 4Runner is about 36" deep and there's more leg room in the rear of the 4R. The Maverick is approx 4.5' bed length.
I like that I can put tall stuff like a snow blower in the back of the 4Runner and it's secure. I have a soft tonneau cover on the Maverick which limits security and can only put stuff as tall as the bedrails if I want it covered. I suppose I could get a fiberglass cap to make things more secure if I wanted.
The interior is nice for being cheap materials. I own some vehicles 3x the cost of the maverick, but honestly it doesn't bother me. Everything looks nice and the quiet ride gives the impression it's a more expensive vehicle. I feel the Escape has the slight edge on interior. It looks nicer with softer materials, even though it's a dated design.
Size wise it's narrow. More like the original Ranger. I had a 2006 Ranger and stepped into a 2009 Tacoma. The Tacoma was huge compared to the Ranger.
Power is fine. The 2.0 EB has 250hp and a 270 tq. It's a peppy engine and these things are supposed to do 0-60 in 6 seconds and 1/4 in mid-high 14s. Trans is lackluster. I had a 2.0 Golf R with the dual clutch auto and that combo was the bees knees. Power for days and the trans was lighting quick.
I am averaging 25mpg and that should get better with break-in. Should be seeing 28 eventually. The Escape took about 5K miles to show 2mpg i improvement it's the same drivetrain. IF you are looking at them for a replacement for a 4Runner, I think you will be disappointed. An SUV is more usable imo. If you need the bed space or small truck, I think it's an excellent vehicle. It's basically a small car with a 4.5' bed in the back. The value for what you get is really amazing though. I am looking to get a couple Hybrid XL or XLT models and put a contractor cap on them for my service guys. I figure it will net 33-35mpg with a cap and the vehicle cost will be 22-25K depending on options. The XLT is the sweet spot for this vehicle imo. The Lariat with all the options @ 35K gets expensive, but again, there's not many vehicles that can compete at that price point. GMC and Chevy are due for a refreshed version of their small pickup next year. So is the Ranger I believe.
At the end of your day, it really depends on your needs and wants. imo if it's your only vehicle I rather have a nicer half ton since I feel it's more usable. If cost is a concern, then it's really the best value. A $35K compact truck will get you half of the features that the Maverick has. However, it will be more capable offroad & towing.
