So for the past 2-3 months i've noticed that if i step on the gas with any kind of real force the smell coming from my exhaust just wreaks. About a week or so ago this is happening seemingly more and more with just casual everyday driving. I've asked a friend who knows a bit more about cars than i and he thinks its my cat going bad. Any second opinions? You cant really smell it too much unless the rear window is cracked or open (which it usually is for me out here in sunny san diego) I have a 97 SR5 V6 with 2wd if it makes any difference or not. Just seeing if anyone else has had a problem like this or knows of a cure. Thanks in Advance.

For some reason Toyota cats seem to be too sensitive to sulfur content in gas. I had the same problem and then I read about the TSB through one of the threads on this forum. The TSB I think applied to newer yotas, but it was definitely an issue with my 4Runner. I ended up sticking to name brand fuels only and don't have an issue any more. When I went with the cheap gas station fuels, the smell was immediate during any type of engine load. I almost always use Shell and sometimes I use BP. hmmm, thats interesting. i never thought of that. But since I have a 97 with "not as strict emissions" as the newer ones, and my car is a cali car through and through shouldn't i not be getting the sulfur smell as much as I am? Maybe I just got a bad tank of gas... I've been using Arco gas for a while but i guess i'll go back to filling up with Chevron and giving that a go. thanks for the input guys. I refuel every monday so i'll letcha know how it turns out when the time comes.

I don't seem to notice any Sulfur smell on my 98 4Runner or my wifes 00 Corolla knock on wood!! However plenty of Toyota's do seem to have this problem. My dad used to have a 01 Camry and it stunk to high heaven the day he brought it home. Tried several times to get the dealer to fix it but they always blamed the gas and that he should use Chevron, Texaco or Shell. It really did not matter and it stunk just as bad with all brands of gas.

I thought I had read a while back that starting at some point the EPA was going to require a lower sulfur content in fuel? It was a while ago so I am sure its in affect now. I still get behind plenty of Toyota's that stink to high heaven and many Honda's as well.

I am only guessing but seriously obnoxious sulfur smell would be from a bad or inadequate catalytic converter. Its hard to tell though as so many cars do it. I had an 09 Kia Sodona van as a rental not long ago and every time the engine was under load it would flood the interior with sulfur smell. Always went away when the engine was not under load.
