Stock 4WD conversion

For guys/gals that have done a stock 4wd conversion. How long will it take to do a stock 4wd conversion if you have two 4 runners side by side and taking parts from a 4wd and swapping them to a non 4wd?

It was 3-4 days of hard work and beer. Remember you need a welder for the crossmember and shifter holes.

Also, this is assuming no rust issues, etc.

You can do various parts separately. The front diff/hubs/axles can be done separately. Then transmission, then wiring. Make sure you change the rear upper control arms when you do the transmission (2WD and 4WD upper arms are different).

You have to move the transmission crossmember location for the 4wd transmission mount to be able to bolt up to the frame. You'll also need to cut out, transfer, and weld the section of body around the transmission and transfer case shifters. The body opening for the transmission and transfer case shifter are different.

4WD upper arms are longer.

The 4WD pinion points up at the transfer case output (due to double cardan CV joint) and the 2WD pinion is level due to two single u-joints in the driveshaft.

nice, have done a couple of 2wd to 4wd and never realized said, makes complete sense when u stop and think... diff add this to my list in the future. Thanks

$300 for the rolled 4Runner with no motor, about $500 in maintenance parts (seals, fluids, broken part replacements, etc.) and about $500 in beer.

I highly suggest getting a parts truck to do it... There are a lot of little things you will miss if you don't have a complete 4WD next to you to compare. Make sure it is the same year and trim if you want the wiring to go smoothly...
