Going N on Hwy. 17 (highway of death) due to many fatalities, and was going around a blind curve in the fast lane and saw a doe sprinting across the slow lane right toward me!!! It was going to meet me right in front of my grill and I was going about 55. I could not veer right as cars were in the slow lane a bit behind me. There was a concrete medium to my right. I slowed and veered left as much as I safely could and...WHAM!!!. My right front hit it's head as it hunkered down and it swung the deer's butt round and took out the mirror.
I managed to control the vehicle and pulled over to the next pull out to the right.
The valance was bent was in as well as the bumper. Right signal , headlight and corner light damaged as well as the mirror. I assumed I would have to unbolt the bumper to straighten it out but realized I could simply pull it back in shape with my bare hands. Talk about flimsy!! If it had been stronger, my runner would have had barely been damaged.
For the deer, it was not a happy ending. I walked back and saw it motion
-less on the shoulder. It may have staggered back there and died or the cars in the slow lane may have hit it also, delivering the coup de gras, and also pushing it off the road.
Very disturbing to hit an animal rather than an inanimate object like another car. Poor deer. On top of that,....I'm a vegetarian and avoid taking life of any kind...even insects.
It's rutting season, so be careful out there.
