Stock Air Box Question Mod

Hey all, so I was chatting with a mate regarding how awesome Toyotas are. He mentioned that the factory air box is far better than an after market one eg: AFE/K&N/ect. Apparently all you need todo is remove the "fender spout" or the pipe attached to the air box that goes into the side of the fender. Also remove the "Carbon filter" or something like that, might be like a HCB???. Located under neath the top of the air box. He sad removing the little filter not the main filter.... Will help with throttle response and sound. He clams a few hp's too.

Is there any truth to this peoples? Let me know what easy mods you did to your 4th gen.

Also I'll throw an off topic question to yea to think about. Running Boards......
Off or On ??

Thanks all, safe travels.

It has ben documented many times that the stock air box performs the same or better than CAI's like K&N. Removing the carbon filter is supposed to help a little, but I did not notice anything other than a very slightly better sound. . . . on my V8. Not sore about the intake pipe, but personally I would leave it on there. If you don't have wife or kids that regularly ride in your rig then remove the running boards. I think it looks better, but my family would not be happy having to "jump" in all the time.

without tuning to match, a cold air intake will not give a noticeable benefit over the stock air box, as noted already. that said, if all you want is sound, then its a great improvement. removing the hydrocarbon filter, or HCF, is very easy, just needs to be popped out, and i noticed a smoother idle and better throttle response, but its not eye poppingly different.

So, I removed the factory HCF and also put a K&N air filter in my stock air box. I did notice a difference in removing the HCF. Better sounds and idles. Thanks for the response and happy trailing.
