Stock Air Intakes - 4Runner vs FJ Cruiser (2010 onward)

Why Toyota did you not build my brand new 2011 4Runner trail edition with the same air intake as my 2010 FJ Cruiser? Makes no sense.

The FJ's intake is basically the same but includes a cyclonic filter and cleaner valve. This feature really works well at filtering dirt before hitting the air filter. After 27,000 km on the original air filter it still looks almost brand new and the amount of dirt I have emptied from the cleaner valve over the past couple of years in amazing.

This part is stock on 2010 and onward FJs and should at least come standard on the Trail Edition. Why Toyota???

My post was not meant as a complaint, but rather a observation of some differences which I find strange from a manufacturing perspective. It would surprise me even more if the FJ and 4Runner intakes were not interchangeable.

Installing the cyclonic filter is a modification that I would highly recommend to anyone whether or not the vehicle is used off road or not. Even driving on highways and city streets the filter catches a surprising amount of particles.

Am I a 4Runner enthusiast yet? Maybe not as I have only owned my TE of less than 24 hours. Toyota enthusiast probably, having owned 4 Toyotas including a Tercel, BJ70 Land Cruiser, and my current FJ Cruiser and 4Runner.
