On my 2003 the only limitation is ground clearance. I do a lot of easier trails here in Arizona. You just have to be aware of rocks that are to big to clear, on my lifted jeep wrangler I run the harder trails as I do not care if it gets banged up. Rocks are very unforgiving. I also so am careful of approch and departure clearance on the bumpers. I am amazed the places the 4runner will climb. Take the running boards off if you are running harder trails or they will get bent up easily. I have never been in mud and never intend to so I have no experience with it, just desert trail riding.
 
The stock 4th gen can handle some pretty good trails. It's biggest downfall is the lower ground clearance though, but a good spotter should be able to get you through the some harder stuff. Definitely take off the running boards. It'll give you some more clearance on the sides.
 
You can do quite a bit. Although I do have the larger 265/70 tires on ( Revos ) I go where ever I want.

A nice lift is fine and I love the looks but you dont gain any clearanced with it at one of the lowest points on the rear axle. Only bigger tires can provide more distance there,it will help with the undercarrage though . The 4R has good cleanance for what it is stock. I would atleast go to the biggest tire for the little extra help.

IMO tires are everything in getting you where you want to go. Put on some 265/70/17's BFG's or Revos and have at it. Off roading takes experience , be careful.

If you do a lift like a 3" front and 2" back like people normally do here , you can still only fit 265/70/17 tires on it without trimming/cutting from what I understand. With the 265/70/17 tires you will still have the same rear axle clearance as you would if you had the 3"/2" lift.

BUT the lifted runner.....looks awesome.

momentum was your enemy there! that and the tires! did you run down the psi a bit?

your runner can wheel stock for sure. just take it easy, pick good lines and dont do any technical trails. wheel with a strap in the rig and ever go alone. no go out and play...post the pics!

Actually pretty much. You can go till your tires loose traction or your skid plate will grab the rock/ground and you get stacked.
 
I never took my rig on anything bone stock i just bought Mud Terrains on Friday, and I hit some trails over the weekend and didn't have a problem the new tires rode so smooth out there. Tore through a lot of mud holes and never got stuck cleaned it off before i got some pics though :( but we just got two days of rain down here so im looking forward to tearing up some stuff Tomm or Friday. But i mean stock for stock my parents owned a Wrangler and this to me is a lot more capable and the clearence is fine in my book but i got a lift waiting for me in the garage and some sliders down the road and ill be happy.
 
Can I take the above to say, 265/70/17s will fit on stock 4 runner with no lift?

That is 31.6" tire instead of the stock 265/65/17 which measures out to 30.6"

Any trimming needed? I wouldn't mind a VERY mild lift to fit 33s, and/or some trimming or even a 1" body lift?

Sorry I haven't found a big thread on this for the 06+ models, and I am looking seriously at a 07 for mild wheeling, daily driver AND towing camper. I really do not want to do ANY suspension lift.

I prob will do whatever tire I can put under it with minor trimming?

Sam, you can fit 265/70-R17 in to the stock, but that would be that maximum size. If you do want 33", you'd have to do 3" suspension lift + get aftermarket rims with 4.5 backspacing. Even with a 3" lift the tires will rub and you'd have to cut inner fender and some plastic from the bumper wheel well. Additional body lift will help you with some trimming, but wouldn't eliminate it.

Yes i fit them up under without the lift and no trimming required, now comes the choice on tires.... :) the toughest decision of any mans life comes down to tires, sadly one of the few things left men get to choose these days. I would suggest going with an all terrain pref. the BFGoodrinch A/T K/O, i went with mud terrains because with modern technology you can somehow manage to get around 40k miles on them before you need new tires, and I just love walking up to my car and drooling over an agressive tred pattern. I feel like a ba (bad ass) down here in Georgia because there are so many 4th gen 4runners and not one is lifted or has decent tires on it, I love pulling up next to them at a light and they turn to look at my car and see it covered in mud and have this look on their face like im a moron or something.... I think to believe I am sometimes. However back to the topic, you can clear them easily without trimming and the M/T come out to be about 32 so i mean 32, 33 whats the difference price? and another inchof tread? more downsides then up in my book and the M/Ts fit the wheel wells perfectly. So if your looking to avoid trimming and a lift just go with some A/Ts for light trailing or you can man up and go with the M/T and enjoy them even more ;) the choice is yours....

EDITED...read your sig, saw you are running firestone m/ts, wondered since BFG m/ts were the 285/70/17....

The BFG A/T does come in 265/70/17 in either a load range C or E.... Since I would be towing a camper I wonder if I should get the Es?

Fireteacher...any pictures of your CB mounts? Was following a 4 runner today and thinking I would mount around rear hatch too, 1 CB antenna, 2nd one for 2m Ham stuff.

I took my 06 4Runner to Hollister Hills on an FJCruiser group trail run. It was a lot of fun and the truck did fine, but it doesn't have the same clearance as the FJs. I was careful on the trails, but it still scraped on certain obstacles. When I got home, I had scrape marks and small dings on the skid plates underneath, but nothing serious. I got one scratch on the paint from a branch along the trail, but ScratchX took it out because it wasn't deep. All in all, I wouldn't go wheelin' again until I got a lift on the truck, but it was fun and I can't regret doing it. Hollister Hills is a moderate trail, so if you tried something easier to begin with, you might be able to make it out unscathed.
