Stock skidplate versus rock @ 50mph

2008 4Runner with 1000 on the odo.

Coming back from Lake Tahoe last night, I had the unfortunate pleasure of testing out the stock engine guard / skid plate at 50MPH. I thought it was snow, as did the other cars with the flats, bent rim and wrecked under carriages.

It looks pretty good to be honest as the front engine skid plate took the brunt of the damage and can probably be bent back.

So...

1. Fixing or replacing it with a new stock one? How much and/or why bother?
2. Alternative vendors for replacement parts, and costs?
3. Can we share skid plates with 2005 and newer Tacomas?

Damn! bummer!
I dont know what would hold up do that, aftermarket or stock....
I have a budbuilt skidplate in the front (only piece for NOW) and its made of 3/16" and is INCOMPARABLY more heavy duty that the stock thing.

wow, thats pretty serious! mustve been the perfect size and shape of rock at that perfect spot and speed. damn.

Wow x2...that is some serious damage to the skid! I would try budbuilt because i hear that they make some nice strong skids, but i am not sure if that is a solution either.

Holy crap... that had to be a good sized rock. I've on 80 a lot of times this winter, I need to stop thinking that everything I drive over are snowballs.

Glad to see your 4Runner not sustaining any more damage other than the skidplate. The front bumper looks unscathed.

The worst I've seen was a complete set of tire chains on the 267 off ramp.

Alittle overkill, but will keep a rock away from my oilpan.

I cruise the SoCal desert, and I always kickup rocks and stuff flying thru washes. So I had to go with a custom skid plate.

I have a Bud Built front skid on my 2004 4Runner and love it. Im thinking of adding Bud's second piece for the t-case, as my underbelly is taking a heck of a beating.

That is some serious negative camber you have going there. I would check into having a camber adjustment unless you do not mind uneven wear and shorter tire life..
