The code is set by the user NOT Toyota. It 3 numbers --- could be the last 3 of the VIN or whatever. You have 10 shots at guessing it before the radio says HELP and you have to go to the dealer for a costly reset. I did same to old one I had taken out of my old 4Rnr --- installed it into my PU. I thought I knew the # but failed after the 10 attempts. here is a time limit for entering the # too. Dealer want's $80 to reset. I did find a six digit code to get it out of HELP but can figure keys to hit to let me even enter them.

2001 Toyota 4Runner-radio locked after battery replacement
Hello folks.. super frustrated that I have spent HOURS trying to find answers & figure out how to unlock my radio in my 2001 4Runner after changing the battery. It is a radio/cd/cass player- stock set...Witht he power of the internet, I cannot find a single answer! Even a dealer can't answer me! I need a seasoned Toyota pro to answer me and hope someone can help. I never had the manual for it and I am the 2nd owner. I did it on Chevy's in the past, but not my Toyota. Be grateful to enlighten me. If you have instructions of steps to walk through, I would love an email directly, as I don't get on here too much and not even sure this post will be seen! Cheers! Any update? I've called two dealerships and they say they can't do anything because their systems are so new...

Coming back here to say I figured it out. If anyone is looking for this I hope this helps the next person:
Head to ToyoDIY.com, and type in your vin. then go to electrical>radio> and find your radio model number. mine was 51706 (1997 4 runner sr5 sports) code for it was 328448 but if you need to find other codes check the pdf in this forum How to bypass disabled or locked up radio codes | Toyota Nation Forum from an old manual.
