Stolen spare tire....

Yesterday, while I was working, someone, instead of going to work and make some honest money, decided to CUT OFF my spare tire. My car was parked on street like many others and the funniest thing is that there are 2 4Runners parked outside place I work because one of my coworkers bought 2005 SR5 (also Titanium). However rpobably they liked sport edition rims more because they took care of mine 4R instead of SR5. I noticed there was something wrong because my alarm remote showed that vibration sensor was activated. However I checked all windows, doors were locked so I thought that someone hit me while parking. I checked if there were any marks left on bumpers but there was nothing so I just went home. I didn't check spare tire because it didn't come to me that someone could steal it. I found out today when I wanted to take out on of the fog lamps from rear bumper....
Now I wonder how much will it be to replace it. I checked partznet and it will be around 500$ for everything including pressure sensor and tire. How many great mods that would buy.........:(
Just wondering.. Did any of You lost his spare tire before? If so how much did it cost You to replace it....

What a bunch of assholes.......How much will they make for one stupid rim????????

How was it done?

The cable hanger that the tire is held by is kind of inaccesible when the tire is cranked up to the chassis. How would they get any kind of cable cutter in there?

Plus it's a braided steel cable, hard as hell to cut through, especially under a car with a wheel in the way. Was the wheel pryed on so hard that it broke the hanger?

what do you mean by "cut off" your spare tire? don't you have to lower your tire before you can take it out? this makes me wary now. what area do you work in? maybe we should look into a lock for our spares.

If I had an answer to how someone stole it I would tell you but I don't. Only thing I know is that I went under my car today and I found no spare tire. Cable was inside of the hanger and I had to take plastic cover to see how much cable is left. When I check length it was enough of it to lower wheel to the floor.

I can't understand how anyone could do it... I don't remember how it looks like when wheel is up. Car was locked so there is no way they could lower it unless there is some way to do it when You are under car. As for broken hanger I wonder if it is even possible....That cable is so hard.......I could think that I "lost" it somehow but then remember about shock sensor from my alarm... If I kick one of the wheels it turns on and give me warning on remote. And there was warning when I came out of work. I'm sorry but I can't believe that lost it.
I think it is good idea to spend few $$$ and buy some cable with lock and lock it to frame or something. I will take some pics tomorrow and show You how it looks like right now to give You some idea...

Trance.... I work near Grand/Western and there is a lot of bums wondering around. But that was not bum. Someone had to know what he was doing . As for lock....BUY IT !!!!
Now I wonder if I should call al junk yards around and check if the have any Sport Edition rim....That thief has to sell it somewhere...

I'm sorry to hear your rim was stolen, it's unbelieveable what people will take.

This surprises me as well. Mine is so far up in the body that it's nearly impossible to reach the cable, plus the cable is really tough. If they cut off your cable, that means the "hook" that hangs onto the rim is gone as well which means you'll need to replace pretty much the whole assembly, I'm sure that'll cost a bit as well.

As for a replacement rim, check out eBay, they usually sell a whole set or just one and they usually run a couple hundred for all four.

I went to take some pics and batteries in my camera died !!!
This is not a good day for me......However I was able to take 2 shots...
First shows You same thing I saw when I discoverd missing spare..
When I took of that white plastic cover almost whole cable was there...

Thanks...You are right. Not only rim but also "hook" and cable. I saw few times rims on ebay but they are rare. However it is going to be the same money that one bought from dealer..

Now...Who wants to sell his spare tire????? :D

damm that fuck up! don't you have to open the hatch and stick that stick in the hole and lower the spear? must be a inside job.

the spare tire is only held on by a cable. Cut the cable and you have yourself a new rim/tire.

sorry to hear this happen.. quite odd.

The stranded wires are all the same length. This leads me to believe that it was cut. Not sure; but if it broke under its own force wouldn

where can you purchase these spare tire locks? because i can only find locks for the hatch mounted spares. not the spares mounted under the truck.

Damn, I knew it was possible somehow as I mentioned in a post in the past. Even without opening the rear hatch to turn the pulley mechanism, I had a feeling that the spare can be stolen from underneath. I'm definitely getting a locking mechanism or a cable lock of some sort. krosno3, sorry to hear the bad news, that sucks

i never checked but does the spare tire have the same aluminum rim on it that the rest of the wheels do?

Yes. It's a full-size tire just like all the others. That's why when I replace the Dunlops with Revos, I did all 5. From now on, 5-tire rotations....assuming no one steals the spare!
