stop leak?

I've got a small oil leak that I just recently noticed. Looks like rear main seal. Not enough at this time to cause any real issues. But it bugs me. Are any of those stop leak additives worthwhile? Or might they actually be harmful?

I don't know, what could it hurt just to give it a try?

I put some Lucas oil stabilizer in my 91 recently, because of the fact that my oil pressure was extremely low, after the Lucas my oil pressure now rides between the L and the quarter line on the gauge. The engine even sounds quieter after the Lucas.

If It were me I would see if Lucas has a stop leak and just try it, you only have about 11 bucks to loose.

I wouldn't do it even just to try unless I knew the motor was already on its way out. You could end up totaly blocking an already partially blocked oil passage and totally starve a bearing/crank/cam of oil...then you have some real problems. fixing a leaking rear main seal is a pain but there is only one way to fix it correctly and it doesn't pour out of a can or bottle.

Yeah, I guess I already knew that. It's not leaking bad at all. I think I'll just wait for rebuild time.

Honestly most don't work, but the only one I have find to help is lucas oil. That **** should be named lucas the miracle oil.

Keep an eye on it.. If it dosen't seem to get any worse just leave it alone... Personally I think those additives are really no good... Except STP's nick name (Stay Together Please).:cheers:

What worked on the 1982 Mustang of a guy I used to know was to change the nature of the oil. He had tried full synthetic oil, but the leak worsened - we were told that the full synth is MORE slippery and can leak easier out of a small breach. Who knows if this is true. He was then told that diesel motor oil (15w-40 in his case) has more of the additives he need in his older engine, and switched to that. It seems to have helped, but who knows.
