Stopping the RUST!

Up here in Canada we unfortunately, put lots of salt down in the winter, therefore rust is an issue. I understand the areas of premature rust on 3rd gens are the bumpers and tailgates. Luckily, my new/old 4Runner was garage kept all its life! However, I've just purchased a product called 'Rust Bullet' a rust inhibitor - I plan on removing the bumpers and coating the inside surfaces. I've noticed, under the hood, that the front frame members (weld joints) are just starting to show signs of rust- I'll coat these too. Has anyone used this product?

Yep, used it on my 2006 2 years ago. Not really happy with the results 2 years later.

Most of mine was surface rust, so I used a wire brush to clean it up, then applied 2 coats of Rust Bullet, then 2 top coats of black Rustoleum.

I'll try to get some pics of it now. I need to do an oil change, and change my brake pads so will be under there anyway.

That was the color of the Rust Bullet. I put two coats of Flat Black over the top.

Thanks for the reply.... I will be very interested in the "after" pics! I still haven't done mine so any input would be appreciated! I have very little rust on the frame, just a few surface spots on joints but the bumpers have some on the inside surface.

Thanks for the first hand experiences! I really don't want to go to all that trouble of removing wiring clamps etc to apply Rust Bullet if it doesn't work!! Have you tried anything else? Thanks for the reply!!

Ive used por15 with good results. i sold the car so i really cant give you long term results though. what i found when i did my car was that the prep work before application and following product directions as far as application is key for finally results.

jdkilroy posted a reply to my visitor's message: "There is a product called "Ospho" that does a great job getting into every nook and crany of rusted areas and turning it into iron phosphate which is inert. Not sure about getting it up in CA. Nice rig though !"

Ospho requires a significant prep which is perfectly reasonable.... Por15 requires prep as well but, looking at other threads, Por15 creates an almost impenetrable barrier (awesome) but may become detached from the metal in time, as one post mentioned (prep?). There seems to be no magic "Bullet" ( pardon the pun!). It appears, it depends on the lengths someone whats to go to and the effort wrt prep, as to what the long term results will be! I still have'nt done my rust proofing, as I'm still not decided on my ultimate goal..... 5yrs or 50yrs!!!!!.... It rained all !@#$ June so now it's boating season, so that decision has been put off until late Summer or early Fall.....

Sorry, what's wrong with using cold galvanizing spray? Add a sacrificial anode if you're really paranoid.

I sprayed that stuff on a cast iron exhaust manifold and rust took three years to come through again.

First, the rear bumper (the most common area for perforation)

Aside from snapping a few bolts and nuts it went pretty well. Everything went back without much of a problem. I did find with the front, when removing the plastic skirt, care had to be taken not to damage the bolt holes/clips.

I'm ready for the coming salt encrusted winter...:thumb3:

Hey man - I just bought a 1998 4Runner SR5 V6 and I live in Kelowna. Do you wheel much around here? I'm looking for places to explore.

Back to the thread - the rust on my unit is bad. Should I even bother trying to fight it? I'd be under there with a wire brush and cans of bullet and paint for days...

I want my truck to last as long as possible! checkout my thread 'stopping the rust'.... rust bullet is expensive... there is also a product called por15 which appears to go on thicker. It chemically combines with the rust and transforms it to iron phosphate, which is inert. If you want it to last, I'd treat it. In your case, I'd be tempted to source por15.

As far as wheeling is concerned, I haven't done alot, but try above Beaver Lake/ Oyama Lake.... or Summerland... or East ... towards the Monashees... we were in Crowsnest this summer....

I will check those products out - however I'm confident I am well past 'preventative' work ... now I just have to rescue what I can and clean up what I can't rescue.

My wife and I drove up to Oyama Lake and loved it. Only found a few small 'wheeling' areas - the rest seemed to be accessible by car as well (as their were a bunch on the road). Didn't want to venture too far off without some more experience, tow hooks, ropes, etc... will continue to explore though. Cheers.

Sorry for the late reply.... If you have serious rust, IMO the treatment I'd use is POR15, as it goes on thick and creates an impermeable barrier.

My Wife and I enjoyed driving up to the Bolean Lakes. Its near Falkland, Bolean Lake Rd. is just south of Falkland to the north-east. Its a steep climb up a logging road, with views over the valley below. We did it in our Chevy Suburban last Spring--- nice afternoon drive!
