strange, gurling/burping noise.

Hey all,
So this noise has been happening ever since I bought the car last year but I never really thought too much of it but I was hoping someone on here could help me out. Any time I first begin to drive my car, I get a strange burping noise from under the hood for about 1 second and then it goes away for the rest of the drive. It happens every time I start the car and begin moving forward in D about 10-20 feet. it sounds like an air pocket being sucked through a pump or something. It doesn't happen when the car is sitting still idling or when i'm moving my steering wheel back and forth or anything. Just happens every time my car drives forward about 10 feet after initial start up.

any ideas?

I used to get this in my last two Camrys (2000, 4cyl and 1998, v6). If you poke around, you'll see people mention things from a heater core, up to a head gasket and even one guy saying it was his transmission.

I would venture a guess that because you aren't commenting about leaks, overheating, weird smells, or anything other than the sound itself it is nothing more than a little excess air in the coolant lines, which you hear surging as the engine starts to turn the water pump.

That's based on my experience. The 2000 Camry had the sound for the entire four years I owned it and the other one doesn't do it as often, but it does happen from time to time.

bump, my truck is still making this noise every time I start driving. Any ideas?

like the guys said before, do you have any leaks? check your fluids and see if you can smell anything.

Mine did the same thing for a little, but I also had a trickling noise. I pulled the radiator cap off ran the car and squeezed the upper radiator hose to get any trapped air out. This happened shortly after changing the timing components and radiator and water pump.

Just a disclaimer, if you do this, remove the radiator cap while the vehicle is off and cold so you don't hurt yourself or others.

Have some distilled water on hand to top off your cooling system when you do this.

My old Camry did it too. Never got to the bottom of it, though i never really tried either.

Does is sound more like a Pop rather than a burp?

If so a backfire out of the intake is most likely it. Referred to as a lean backfire.

idk if this helps but i have a silly water pouring around when i use my AC...

do you have the heater or AC on?... if you rev the engine does anything happen?

since this happens when you start the vehicle is it still in park or in gear?

That can usually be fixed doing the same thing I did. When the motor is cold, remove the radiator cap, turn the temp setting to hot and the fan on, then start and run the vehicle and let it heat up. While everything is running squeeze the upper radiator hose every now and then gently to help release any trapped gas in the system.

Have a gallon of distilled water to pour in to make up for the space the released gas was taking up.

If it is a gurgling sound you probably just have some air in your cooling system and need to bleed it.
