This is driving me crazy. I have a 01 Limited 4runner 4WD with 149700 miles. This noise has been there for a long time. It is very low. If you have the radio on you can barely hear it. Whenever I accelerate from a stop I hear a very slight constant noise. It’s hard to explain the sound. Not really a metal on metal more like a noise caused by rotation. It speeds up and gets a little louder if I press the gas harder. Once the vehicle is at a constant speed it stops. I only hear during acceleration. I don’t hear it at highway speeds probably because of the road noise drowning it out. It sounds as if it is under the car around the passenger seat or under the middle console. If I roll down the window the wind drowns it out. I cannot pinpoint this. My first guess would be the drive shaft joints. But I have no idea. It does not happen while revving the engine. Sounds EXACTLY like the problem I'm having BUT I hear the noise even when I'm going and I let off the gas.
Other then that I can't hear it with the window down it's in the console area/Passenger side. Mine is also a rotational sounding noise. I can't figure it out. Its mostly noticeable at 30-35 mph.
My best advice would be to call a Toyota Dealer, and ask if they have any techs that specialize in driveability issues. Specifically NVH (Noise, Vibration, Harshness) problems. A good driveability tech should be able to determine the cause.
Diagnosing the issue over the internet, without hearing or feeling the issue, will just be a bunch of random guessing.
I'll take a guess and say maybe worn ring and pinion gears. Have you ever checked/replaced the gear oil in the rear diff?

I have not changed the gear oil yet but had thought about doing it soon. I know it may be hard to diagnose but if just one person out there has had the same issue they will probably know exactly what i am talking about. It is pretty distinctive even though it's so hard to explain. What is the recomended interval to change the gear oil. I am at 150000. I know it is probably past due but it should not be so past due that it is damaged.

Seemed to be worth it.
Mine just started making the noise two weeks ago.
The best way I can describe the noise is a wom..wom..wom but when I say it out loud it doesnt seem right ! idk lol.. I'll go out and get a sound clip of it. Hopefully my phone will pick it up

I was going to do the same thing! Do you know what kind of grease I use for the zerks? I don't have my original manual that came with the car. :[
Mine is a 2000 so I think it should probably be the same as you 01.
The book says you need to types of grease I don’t know if it matters but I always follow everything as close as I can. It sucks because you have to have two grease guns (or make a big mess). The two types are Lithium base chassis grease NLGI No.2

I had a very similar noise...and it drove me absolutely nuts! I finally figured out it was my skid plate. Last time I had engine work done they did not properly connect the upper and lower skid plate causing a rattle whenever I accelerated under load. I could sit in park and rev all day and nothing...as soon as I was under load....there it was.

I have the same issue. It sounds like it is coming from the drivers side front wheel, but its not the wheel at all because it is only heard while under light acceleration or trying to consist a constant speed over 45 mph.
I am an "official" newbie now, but have been lurking for years. I have done a lot of work myself including install of lift, bumper, brake job, and last week plugs and wires. I feel that I am good a diagnosing mechanical problems with my rig, but this one def has me stumped. No CEL either. (except for a PO 420 which I have been avoiding for about a year now)
I have an appointment on the 1st of April to figure out what this is....but would like to avoid this appointment....
..anyone have any updates?
Any other sugguestions would be helpful.

Okay! I did not get to grease everything like I wanted to this weekend. However I did have to take off my skid plates because I needed to change my front diff oil. The oil looked pretty clean, I probably did not need to change it. This morning I tried to get my car to make the noise again and I could not. It was almost annoying since I had not done anything that should have fixed it. Here’s the kicker. I was too lazy/rushed to put the skid plates back on. This could be it. I will give it a day or so to see if the noise comes back. Then put them back on to see if the noise returns. Odd thing is the noise did not sound like a vibration issue. ReconCmdr says his plates were not connected properly. I am pretty sure mine were. We will see.
Sorry... False alarm. I went out for lunch and could still hear it. I will try to grease everything sometime soon and then check the bearings.

I then jiggled the passenger side and it had very little play in it. So I am sure that this is where the noise is coming from. With a 160K and some light wheeling and lifting it a 120K Im sure this needs to be replaced.
Check your CV axles....
Does anyone know how much play should be in the inner CV axle?
Also, I have been now in SLC for the last two months, can any one recommend a reasonable mechanic.

Did you notice if the sound is louder when driving first thing in the morning? Mine this morning sounded louder than normal. It was a little colder this morning. But as soon as the car warmed up it got less noticeable. It must be a joint that once it gets hot whatever grease is still on it becomes more lubricating. Whenever I am just coasting I do not hear it. How hard is it to fix the CV axle problem you are describing?
