Strange noise when braking?

Just wanted to see what everyone thought this was before I took it into the stealership. I just rolled 40k miles, my brake pads are getting down there, but I don't have to replace them just yet. I hear this noise coming from the front drivers side wheel, it sounds like sheet metal being dragged, every time I come to a stop. Sometime while I come to a stop the brakes kind of shutters. Any idea what this might be? Brake pads, wheel bearing, brake shield? Thanks.

I didn't think it was the brake pads. It doesn't have a constant screech like when pads are worn down. It just makes a noise for 2 seconds and than goes away.

But I guess I'll check the pads and see if that fixes the problem. Thanks all!
 
Ok so I took it into the dealership the other day and they said my brake pads still had some life on them. They did notice that the dust shield was a little bent, so they just bent that back. Didn't hear anything afterwards, but the sound came back after driving 2 hours back to school.

Now its coming from the driver side and passenger. Now I'm getting multiple noises.

~at 40mph the wheels make a ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-ch sound but go away if I go above or below.
~While coasting to a stop I get a loud metal on metal sound, just for a second, it doesn't drag out as if my pads were done for.
~Also get a loud metal on metal sound coming from just the passenger side, no acceleration, coasting down a steep hill.

Now I do need a wheel balance and an alignment, wasn't sure if that would have any effect on where the sounds coming from. Lug nuts are all tight, I have no idea what this could be.

Sounds like you need to call Click and Clack.
 
40K! I say it's time for a new Salsa Red TE with TRD wheels and that S/C that URD will announce at Ouray. Oh wait, that's the one I want.

BTW, sure sounds like b r e a k s to me too.
 
Warped rotor? Gravel or something metal stuck in the pad? Are the pads worn evenly.. some vehicles engage the pads at angle, and I've seen pads that looked like they had half their life on one side, but the other was worn down to the metal, and the wear sensors were still intact. Also, the noise only at 40mph sounds like an unbalanced wheel that's finding its resonant frequency. It could also be a rock stuck in the tire if you have deep knobbies.

When you look at the rotor, are you seeing lines on them (like rings on a tree)? that would be the indicators of the brake pads announcing themselves. If you rings have gaps in them, you may have a warping to your rotor.

If you dont believe it's the brake, you can take the pads out so there is plenty of clearance and then spin the wheel to see if you hear the noise.

Wow, that was an unexpected solution. Congrats, and thanks for sharing! Reminds me of a rattle that I only had at like 700 rpm in my corvette. Ended up being a large piece of gravel perfectly wedged in/on top of the exhaust x-pipe flanges.

Does anyone know what that white plastic piece he removed from the Gas Tank is?
