Strange noise when filling with gas

So i have always filled my cars while the car was running and this is my first Toyota so i may just not be aware. I noticed the first time filling my 4R that there was a strange metallic pumping noise coming from the fill when i removed the cap. Crazy noisy, very strange and does it every time if i leave it running.

I did notice when wanting the more accurate MPG read outs they suggest turning off the truck, and i know its always recommended. But i have never herd this before?

Just making sure i am not crazy assuming its just the fuel pump and this is normal for the 4R. Never experienced this before while filling other vehicles/trucks.

Im pretty sure you are hearing a connection in the tube that runs under vacuum with the engine on and cap tight. I am leery of filling while running because you are risking having that vacuum connection take in liquid fuel where its design is to take in only vapor. It could possible over time shorten the life of some fairly expensive evaporative emmissions equipment.

Then theres the safety concern...

Thank you for the useful info. Definitely aware of the exaggerated safety concerns. And i will be definitely filling with the car off since its so darn noisy. lol Just odd this is the first vehicle i have ever experienced this.

On a side note i have always filled when the car was ruining, like well over 1,000,000mi (Acura,Mazda,Ford,Chrysler,Chevy) and never had any fuel related issues on any of them.

You can burn yourself alive at the gas station with static electricity or even a cell phone (it's more then documented you can pull footage yourself). Despite the slim chances there are countless things on a vehicle that can short and ignite vapors. Lest we forget your catalytic converters can do the exact same thing.

Chances are slim. Same with smoking a cigarette. But, it's negligent to do it either way. If you end up killing someone because your car explodes in a gas station (which like a said happens often all over the world on camera) you WILL be held LIABLE. They post signs saying to turn your vehicle off and just like if you ignore a no trespassing it can be used against you in court.

You increase the risk of body harm for everyone around you. The word entitlement comes to mind.

Not to mention some cars run pressure in the tanks and that sound you hear might be you damaging whatever pump creates vacuum. So, if you don't give a damn about yourself and people around you, at least you can do for the truck.

So the safety concerns are exaggerated in your opinion...and all of your years of filling with the vehicle running and no problems prove it?

I USED to know a painter/maintenance guy who cleaned his paint brushes with gasoline while smoking cigs. He told me it is not a problem and would toss a lit cig into the gasoline to prove it--and it would go out. Then one warm day he did his magic trick and the vapors ignited--boom! He burned to death. He was correct--the liquid did not ignite--but the vapors did. Have you ever smelled flesh and hair burn? Not something you will forget.

If you think that vapor ignition can't happen when you fill a running vehicle, at least have your passengers leave the vehicle so only you will be burned when it does.

Your a paranoid guy aren't you. Surprised they haven't suggested removing your catalytic converter before pulling up. lol

Its not a slim chance, its vertically non existent. But still a chance none the less. I did see a fairy the other day.

Hay l lived on the edge this whole time and didnt know it!

Exaggerated, but more so overstated for good reason. How many people drive around the world and how many times has this happened in a day? But that's not the point, its dangerous nonetheless.

Very good example, a cigarette will not light gas or fumes on fire easily. But a hot day, a high burning cigarette can certainly start a fire. I used to work at a print shop, it was of high concern. Worked at a gas station for years as well.

um that was CNG inside of a car, not gasoline

if there is any amount of humidity or breeze you're not going to be able to ignite gasoline vapors with a static electricity spark or your cell phone, even if humidity is low and there is no breeze it would be incredibly difficult even if you were trying to and all you need to do to prevent is touch the metal on the house before pumping to neutralize any static which you're supposed to do every time you pump.

turning off the car doesn't immediately make the exhaust not hot or disconnect all electrical, the risk of fumes or gas spilling on hot exhaust is still true when the car is off.

i'm surprised filling with the engine on didn't trigger an engine light from evap issues.

Ah it's all coming together now. Darwin normally sorts yall out.

In the meantime good luck running your 4runner at the pumps. Hopefully you don't get any of the jail time or $2500 fines for your entitled misinformed opinion. Hopefully you don't hurt anyone but yourself.

I could sit here all day finding videos of explosion and fires at GS. I picked that image because typical american media wont show blood and guts. It's a vehicle explosion whose shrapnel killed. It's no different from any other explosions.

Scroll through the hundreds of videos. Let me know when you find one that justifies negligence however unlikely it is.

Sounds like you have never leave your state and always believe what your told. There is no jail time or fine for filling while getting gas in most states, at best its falls under suggested safety rules.

Remembered seeing this awhile back on Myth busters. Cool episode. Static electricity: yes. Cell phones: no.

YouTube

If your battery shorts and spits fire like they do it's 100% possible. It's TV show doing a controlled test. Not all variables are accounted for in most of their episodes.

"Mythbusters did it". It's no excuse for negligence.
