Stripped skid plate bolt

Good morning,

I’ve got a 2015 SR5 with a stripped skid plate bolt. Am I able to mod this to accept the TRD skid plate? Everything I’m reading is saying it used M10 bolts but, I’m pretty sure the bolt I jacked up is an M8.

The dealership stripped both of my 2 front skid plate bolts. I didn't realize this until long after the warranty had run out. You can pay someone to tap the threads again or just get a bigger, harder bolt and force it in there. That's what I did and many years later it's holding just fine.

Edit: Maybe I misunderstood. You mean the bolt itself or the threaded area in the frame is stripped? If it's just the bolt you can go to Lowes or Home Depot and match it up using their bolt identifier. It's a simple device you just screw your old bolt into.

There is a really good thread on this forum that tells how to replace the bolts with studs (TRD Skid Plate Mounted w/ Studs 2010-2021)

Once you get the old bolts out, you might consider doing this so you don't have future problems.

Dealership stripped two of mine too. Idiots like to use impacts where you don't need that much power.

You could chase the threads and clean them up if it's not too bad, or you could go with a helicoil. I'd much rather a helicoil over putting an oversize bolt.

I ended up tapping them out and replacing all four bolts. I’ve got smaller bolts m8 instead of the m10 used in the thread that shows how to mod the skid plate for studs. Are those larger holes there as well? Do I just install the studs and then the other kind of skid plate?

Well, 19 years down the road and I'm good I don't take it off road so I just keep the skid plate there because, well, it's there. It pulls my bass boat and Airstream just fine, which is why I got it. It hasn't been back to that dealership except for tires. I have an independent that's Toyota certified for all the things I can't fix.

Helicoils are inferior. You should use a Timesert: ++ TIME-SERT Official Threaded inserts for stripped threads, blown out sparkplugs,

for what he is using it for, it doesnt' really matter. i think they will all work well in that application.

I have used helicoils in the past with great success on high stress/load (i.e. swing arm latch) and its still holding up strong. The only reason i choose it was it easily available at the neighborhood o-reillys when i desperately needed it.

Just FYI - the support bars that the skid plate bolts to are themselves just bolted on. So if you can't or don't want to fix the threads you can just replace the support bars. Not the cheapest option but it will reset everything back to how it was new.

I just did helicoil in one damaged one. Switched to 1/2 head with 5/16 thread. OEM is M8 1.25 with variable lengths depending if its front rear or the longer center ones.

DO not torque bolts more than 12-15 NM

I am actually surprised that these can strip easily in the frame, as the frame is steel and not aluminum...

and do not take it to dealer.. LOL
