Strong Oil or Gas Smell? Like it's running rich?

Hi All,

Wondering if anyone here has some ideas as to what some potential causes are for me to smell and oil/gas odor -- almost like the truck is running rich. I only seem to notice it on shorter drives, but I suppose it's possible that it happens on longer drives and I just used to the smell. You can smell it from the inside or outside of the vehicle.

It's a 2003 V6 SR5 4x4 with 26,000 miles (26k, yes). I haven't changed the coolant and haven't noticed any leaks in the engine bay or under the truck. I also haven't had to fill any fluids.

I can't imagine this is totally normal. Any ideas? I searched a bit for "rich gas smell" and a few other things but couldn't find any threads on it.


Edit:

I'm also not having any check engine lights, or noticing anything particularly weird while driving. It's just that the odor is pretty notable and seems out of the ordinary.

Same issue with my 99. some jacka** chopped my exhaust off from behind my cat (don't kno why he would want that rusty crap). Anyway my cat started throwing codes and i deemed it was probably the 02 sensor that was bad so after a few weeks of putting of getting a new one I noticed the same smell, and my mpgs went down. Check for faulty exhaust gaskets, new cat needed o2 sensor on the Fritz, and maybe run some injector cleaner and add sea foam thru vacuum system into ur throttle body run for 10 min. It will look like ur car is on fire as there is hella smoke that pours out. Totally Normal. All those should help
