As far as I am aware the bushings and retainers are in under the top hat.

Awe, damn dude, that sucks. Happened to me on my bilstein 6112s... essentially the same shock.

# 1 do not try to crank down on the top nut. That is how I destroyed my 6112s.

Did you do the install yourself? Are you using the OEM upper strut mounts?

My issue was using KYB strut mounts and the bilstein washers and bushings. Pretty sure they were not compatible and I would have been fine if I used the kyb bushings and washers.
 
I’m guessing you purchased and installed these as fully assembled coilovers? It’s odd that the dust boot is missing, makes me wonder if you’re missing the spacer/washer that sit below the strut mount because I’m pretty sure they sit on that dust boot. Also, not sure if it matters, but I know these are driver and passenger side specific since the spring perch sits at different heights between the two sides.

the side specific placement is good to mention, but that would only amplify the driver side lean. I'm guessing the lower washer and or bushing is either missing, improperly assembled and or an aftermarket strut mount with stock washers/ bushings were used.
 
I just put 5100s on mine today along with KYB top hats. As said already, there should be a large washer and another thick rubber bushing under the strut mount. Without those, you get what yours looks like.

Also, it’s difficult to tell from your pics but do you have the thick rubber spring pad installed above the spring? I don’t think that would cause your issue but it is necessary.

So this is the TRD set that is on clearance for the FJ. My model is the ORP. The TRD stuff did not come pre assembled. The dust boot was missing, I *****ed at them for that. I bet my issue is that there is a rubber bushing attached to the dust boot and because I don’t have the dust boot I don’t have that rubber bushing and I only have the washer under the top hat so my shock is going too high.

needless to say, do not drive it until you get the boot/ bushing. You might be able to get the boots/ bushing on without completely pulling the coil over.

that sucks dude, but at least they are salvageable. Still need to see if I can cut the nuts off of my 6112s and clean up the step threads with a tab and die. hopefully I can resurrect and sell them.
 
That bushing and retaining washer shouldn't be up above strut tower. Recheck your install and manual, also your springs may be for different application (too soft or short). GL

I believe there is a bushing/washer set that is mirrored on the opposite side of the strut mount in addition to the pair above the strut mount. They should sit on the shock boot.
 
I just got mine today. The dust boot has a metal spacer on it. Without the dust boot installed the nut wont bottom out on the top hat. You either need the dust boot or get a spacer.
