So way back when me and my friend threw one of those ghetto high flow intakes from auto zone on his 2wd 4runner (it was basically an excuse for me to come over to his house and drink his beer haha). So yesterday his battery was dead and I jumpstarted it for him and I couldn't help but notice he had this flexible tube running from the filter to the original hole for the airbox. I lmfao when I saw it. He insisted that it sucked in cold air while allowing you to still have a high flow filtration system. I told him that his little pipe didn't give any cold air to the engine and that it only would work if he cove up the exposed filter. Long story short we made a 20 dollar bet and I really want that 20 bucks :) . So whose right? I'll show him yalls responses later. Thanks, and here is a pic

I'm willing to bet you're right.

The filter will still suck in more air from the compartment than it will from that little hose.

Like you said, the only way it MIGHT work is if he covered the filter, then put the tube down below his bumper, thus making some sort of ram-air.
 
without a heat shield around that filter even with out his little ducting that big filter is hurting his power and mileage. all that big cone filter does is suck hot air from the radiator and engine bay onto his intake. even without that ducting, the small factory hole could not keep up and over come the amount of heat being produced by the motor...
 
Unless I am missing something there is little to no filtration going on at all. Path of least resistance says it will suck air from the fender right through the middle of the filter and not even be filtered.
 
Haha thanks. I would imagine that I have a good enough general consensus to prove my bud wrong. Yay 20 bucks to me. In all fairness though it looks kinda cool though. But it got me thinking, what if you could build some kind of enclosure from like a huge pipe to cover the filter. And then you could run a snorkel with a high flow intake :) . Oh and mmm14 to answer your confusion: it is filtered, its just like any other high flow filter. What he did was he saw this kit at AutoZone and thought it would be cool. Is purpose built to plug into the tip of the cone filter. So it gets filtered but I doubt much air moves through it.

yeah thats not gonna work cause the snorkel is gonna limit your air intake along with the throttle body port...

Yeah that's why you would make it removable or make some kind of removable cover (like a weird deckplate mod). I have a K&N (PO had a ram air intake on it when I got it) and have always wanted a snorkel. I think I may be onto something.....

Uh, yeah, if there's no filtration behind that pipe, then you better take all his money, cause he is too stupid to handle it himself...

Tell him that for only $150 you will put some "speed holes" in his hood...
 
I'm not saying its a good idea by any means but I believe there is a filter element on the inside of the cone as well. If not, holy **** man, I hope he hasn't been driving it that way long.

definitively stupid.....

that said though those intakes suck but it would be cool if we could come up with an inline filtering system kind of like above..but actually worked...seems like it would be cool for dual battery.....

also what's that other stupid piece of chrome and filter he has on the front of the block by the throttle cables....i'm sure that does something awesome as well...adds like what 20 hp?
 
^ It looks like he is venting his pcv to atmosphere.

Your right, path of least resistance is through the large area of filter, sucking in hot air.
 
Tell your buddy companies like K&N and Volant have research and development departments that engineer their products for maximum efficiency. There is a reason theirs don't look like his.

Not saying that makes it a good idea and that I don't agree air will always follow the path of least resistance. I've never tried a system personally or installed one for anyone else to give any sort of feedback. I do know one of the import performance magazines did a dyno test of it, but I don't remember which one, or the exact results off of the top of my head, but I do believe that it had a positive result.

The only other thing I will throw out is that path of least resistance would be a straight path like the inverted cone area of the filter that he is using not the 45-90deg turn required by the "hot air" portion of that filter. He kind of kills that though by using that corrugated tubing and having that nasty kink in it right before the filter.

For those that are saying it is unfiltered air:

that should be a similar design to the filter he is using.
 
Thats a good way to increase filter area, I was hoping there was more to it than what I saw. Thanks for the picture.
