Absolutely! The oem stereo has very little power. Any aftermarket is at least 40 watts per channel. That's not much too 'stereoheads', but it's plenty to perk up those aftermarket speakers. (that probably didn't sound that much better than OEM with the OEM head unit)
A cheaper alternative is the Scion head units by Pioneer. Same power as the aftermarket hu's for $50 or so! Looks stock too.

Ok. Sweet. Tell me more, I don't know anything about this subject. So the more power I can get to the speakers, the better sound? And after market head units send more power? A friend told me that you want a cd player that has at least 4 x 50 watts. Am I on the right track?
And you're right. The new speakers that I put in sounded better, but not at all as good as I was expecting.

More power up to a point. Most better speakers require more power as a MINIMUM than do crappy speakers. You could drive the oems with a clock radio. Takes a little more OOMPH to move the better (stiffer?) speakers, but then they sound SO much better.
Every aftermarket head unit (I've ever seen or had) has 40-50 watts per channel. You can probably buy some with more. There is no functional (loudness) difference between 40-50. That's enough to make replacement speakers sound good, but not to drive a subwoofer or for the guys that want to shake the truck. (though that's subwoofers too)
So yes, any aftermarket hu is going to sound much better than the stocker.

For a decent sound system you need to fork out the dough. There is no sense in doing a half way upgrade. Where I come from you either go big or go home.
It sounds to me, that you want a powerful full sound. My suggestion is to buy a HU, followed by amps & speakers, and top it off with a preamped sub.
There are other things to add as well, like a seperate EQ or even a power capacitor.
I like kicker amps, MB Quartz speakers, & JL subs. But shop around and see what catches your ears. I had this setup for sometime and it was a headturner.....always.
It always is better to buy the system from the same maker because they are made to complement each other.
