Stupid question

Iknow this question is silly but i have to ask to be sure ... i have a 1991 diesel 4runner (ln130l -gkmds) and i want to know how to use the 4x4...do i just lock the hubs manually i shift to l4 or h4 or whatever? or do i need to do reverse or something ?? plasee help i am goint on a trip soon ... thanks

The locking hubs sync the front wheels with the front differential. The 4WD shifter allows the transfer case to send power to the front differential via the front driveshaft. So lock your hubs, then shift to 4HI, and *poof*, you're in 4WD.

You won't need to reverse to leave 4WD. That's for rigs with automatic hubs.

Sounds like you're new to 4WD in general, so a couple things to remember are 1) check your front diff fluids, especially if you don't know the last time your truck was in 4WD. It might not hurt to get the whole system checked out. 2) it's ok to have the hubs locked but the shifter in 2WD. You don't need to get out and unlock the hubs every time you leave 4WD. Just remember that locking the hubs increases wear and decreases mileage, so don't leave them locked for too long. 3) Don't use 4WD unless you have to. My pops always said 2WD was for getting into trouble, and 4WD was for getting out. Good advice for somebody who isn't experienced. 4) 4LO is for going slow. If you're stuck in snow or mud, 4LO could actually hurt your chances of getting out, because you're more likely to spin your tires.

hey thanks for the advise! i have alrdy checkd fluids and also did had to repair somethin on my back differrential!
i will post some pics after my trip!
