Sub size, number and ports or not, for suv

I used to drive a Nissan hardbody. In it I had 2 Boston acoustic speakers and 1 Boston acoustic 12" sub in an sealed box.
It was powered by a Sony 4 channel. 75watts to the speakers and 150 bridged to the sub.

It sounded perfect. I had the best sounding system out o everyone I knew. Nobody would believe it was a 150w amp.

I had my brother inlaw do everything and choose everything as he was a manager at mobile one and got great discounts and knew a lot. I got it all for 200$

so I decided to put it into my girlfriends beetle and got a 500w alpine amp. Same 12 in sealed box sounded great. But keep in mind both of these were small vehicles

I want that exact same feeling, not too much not too little. I listen to jazz-rock -heavy and don't need a ton of bass. I listen to rap down and then just to push my sub.

I'm a bassist so I do know a good bin about speakers and such but I am just not sure what I should do?

I like the smoothness of 12s without the size of a 15 soi think I'll stick to 12s.

Ported or not ported?

I know ported is much louder, and it also goes deeper (had a ported box for a week) I heard things I never knew were there justfrom going from sealed to ported. However I also know it takes up more room and is overall more boomy. What would you say 1 ported 12 or 2 sealed 12s.

One more thing is number of speakers?
I'd like to keep it small and semi cheap. But I prefer the way speakers sound when there not pushed. I have owned many bass cabinets and the a 8x10 at 1/4 volume always sounds better than a 4x10 at half volume. Anyways I just wAnt the sub to fill my suv like my 1 sealed 12 did in my little Nissan.

Funny side story I once put my 8x10 I. The back of my truck and hooked it up to my amp. Very cool.

I'd say it depends on the sub as to whether or not you port. Some subs work better sealed, others ported. Most subs will have box recommendations in the owners manual. Narrow down your search, then I'd look there and see what's recommended. I know my JL sub had diagrams of how to make the ports, size, etc (although I was going sealed, this caught my attention). If what you had works, then why do something different? It's my understanding ported will provide more "boomy" bass whereas sealed will be more tight/punchy. It all depends on what you want and how much space you're willing to sacrifice.
