SUB VS. AMP question

currently i have a RF amp pushing 300 RMS (not sure what model #) and i am buying 2 MTX subs rated at 250 RMS...


will i have any problems with my amp? such as working too hard or getting over heated with these 2 subs instead of 1 sub that its pushing currently?

edit, everything is 4 ohm subs and amp

The amp won't have any problem if you just connect each sub to its own channel. But the subs will be getting more than their recommended amount of power.
 
So you have a two channel amp that does 300 RMS on each channel at 4 ohms?

The exact amp and subs would be nice.

If the first statement is correct you won't have any problems.
 
im a bit confused.... i have 1 amp, 2 subs, and 2 channels (+- and a +-) so thats it? i just wire one subs pos/neg to the amp pos/neg and same for the other sub

From what I gather, your amp puts out 300 RMS total, so for 2 channels it would be 150x2.
I'm just guessing because an amp rated at 300x2 will almost certainly proclaim that it is a 600W amp.

So each 250w sub will receive 150w each, which is fine. As long as you don't turn up the amp trying to make it sound louder, everything should be fine.

Yeah, posting up the model numbers can eliminate any doubts you have. My answer was based on the assumption that each channel put out 300 rms. Typically the user manuals for amps will give common wiring examples and the manuals can be found on the manufacturer's website if you have a model number.
 
Oh ok. I was going to say it would probably be better to just buy one sub that can handle what ever your amp bridges at, but you don't have that option now.
 
Ok. Are you wanting this to get a lot louder? We might be able to figure out what kind of sub and amp you have by looking at a picture.
 
Oh ok. That makes a lot more sense now. Did you make your own box? I hope that you didn't buy those from Crutchfield because they can be found elsewhere for a lot less.

Your amp is a mono amp. It only has one channel.

Your going to want to wire your two 4 ohm subs down to a 2 ohm load to get the most out of the amp. I'm not sure if that amp puts out rated power, but I think it should.

Each sub will get somewhere around 160 RMS.

From the little info given this is my conclusion:

You have a class A/B or B amp rated for 300rms for 2 channels. You then have 150 watts per channel *at peak*, you probably have more like 100 watts per channel at normal usage.

Trying to stay simple here, you can run your 2 subs with the amp, it is most definitely not "too much amp", it is exactly the opposite. You have barely enough amp for the speakers, it will be working very hard if you turn it up really loud often. The rule of thumb that should be used is double the rated power for the speaker, if your speaker is 250 RMS your amp should be around 500 watts RMS (and that is for each speaker or channel), the acceptable range lies in some math. So you have 500 watts which is the ideal number if you multiply that by .8 to 1.25 so that any amplifier from 400 Watts to 625 Watts is acceptable. So if you want 2 250 watt RMS speakers you need something closer to the range of 750+ watts rms for a subwoofer amp.

Unlike some info I've seen here the biggest reason for speaker failure is inadequate amplification.

Now this is still based on the ideal, and with that knowledge less than ideal can sure still work. But the guessing around here can get to be a bit much sometimes.
 
ok i gotcha, yes i did NOT buy that from crutchfield, i got a buy 1 get 1 free from circute city, so i got 2 of them for like $109, its was a steel i had to take, um..... yes i did custom build a box, and carpeted it! it looks really nice! i will post pictures up when i get the subs, they are on backorder since everyone wants these subs, so i have been waiting for them for about 2 months now and im really getting pissed, but o well they will be nice to have

That's cool man. If the box wasn't already built I would say cancel your order and get a different sub, but that's too late.
 
how will these new subs work? i mean will they be louder than my current sub?


i may hvae a chance to sell my current sub and amp for 500, and it still has 3 years left on the warranty, so i dont think it will be hard! and i might be able to update my amp with the money i get from these subs... do u guys think this is the way i should go?
 
If you can sell that one sub, the box, and that amp for $500 that would be good in my opinion.

That would leave you with a lot more room to work with. You can get an amp that does over 1,000 RMS + a new box + a new sub or subs for $500, I believe.

If you added that one sub to your current system it would probably be a little louder, but not a huge amount.

If you sell that stuff I think you could get a pretty loud set up.
