I thought the T4R with V8 was a full time AWD.

The short answer is that the 4Runner is a truck body and is designed for off-road travel whereas car based vehicles such as the aforementioned Subaru and Volvo are designed for on-road travel.

Despite different drive system configurations the vehicles may behave similarly but due to the design intent of the vehicles vary in their performance dependent upon their usage.

Thanks for the link. In case others areinterested, the 4Runner uses a Torsen T-3 for the center diff. Here's a link from Torsen(pdf) and here is a white paper on Torsen from 1988.

One thing I dont like is how Subaru advertises the Outback as an SUV. Hmmmm looks more like a station wagon with an extra inch of ground clearance. They were on tv advertising that the Outback has the lowest rollover rating of any SUV. Well duh! It isn't as tall! ANd it isn't a true SUV.
