Subwoofer box ideas for a 4th gen?

Hey, I'm new to this forum and I own a 2007 4Runner. I'm looking to add 2 emminence 15" subwoofers without loosing as much trunk space as possible. I need to purchase a box or design one that would fit the slant of the back seats to give me the most room. I have an idea of what i want and the total box volume has to be 1.5-3 cu.Ft. Here is my original design that will give me 1.73 cu.Ft in each side:

The box is a total of 40" wide, 19" tall and 15" deep, made out of 3/4 MDF and at that angle it should slide right under the slant of the seat.

If anyone has any better ideas on what I should do please let me know.
Also I have one more question, what is the easiest way to hook a subwoofer up to the stock 4th gen head unit? I'm not really looking to buy an aftermarket unit. Thanks

I can't think of anything better than that with 2 15s.

May be good to post in the 4th gen sub forum if you don't get a lot of hits here, I'm not sure this subforum is very active.

As far as the box goes, I'm not sure what your level of ability is but that will need to be a very well built box to handle the vibration of the 15's. You have some large, unbroken surfaces in your pictures that have the potential to vibrate themselves in ways that can ruin the quality of your sound and/or self destruct the box.

you'll need a fair bit of reenforcing ribs and bracing to strengthen the structure and quiet it down.

As far as connecting to the OEM HU: Would need to know more about what you have for outputs but may need to use an amp that can accept and process amplified output signals because a lot of the HU's don't have preamp outputs. The ones that do could be a hassle to interface with (JBL systems). I believe you would need to connect to the output side of the JBL amplifier to get a analog signal.

You might give Crutchfield a call and talk to one of their techs. They have dealt with this a lot and the usual best answer is switching to an aftermarket HU rather than trying to connect amplifiers to OEM equipment.

Its going to be kick-ass once you get it sorted out!

That box looks ok, I would add a few small triangular braces, and use 1" MDF for this box. Anything less is likely to blow apart. Use wood screws with liquid nails in the holes, make sure to predrill before screwing the box together. Use liquid nails on all the seams before screwing the box together, then use liquid nails to seal up all the seams.

I see you have the front panel in two pieces. Did you do that for simplicity to mirror the drawing? If not I would make it one piece and double that center baffle. I dont know what music your listening to but back when i had my explorer I had 2 mbquart 12's and ended up taking out one of my boxes. Sound quality was better with just the one running on about 150 watts rms. In my 4runner I want to make a fiberglass box that mounts in the stock location but larger so I dont lose the cargo area.

I dont know about you but I have needed to fold down my seats a good bit and have filled the rear area many times. So what i'm getting at is if you ever do that the design your looking at will take that ability away. I did get a little more bass in the explorer with the sub pointed at the back window BUT I lost the utility with it blocking the seat from folding down. My box was a 1 cu ft sealed box that would only block the small half of the folding seats too.
