Subwoofer box ideas

Hey, I'm new to this forum and I own a 2007 4Runner. I'm looking to add 2 emminence 15" subwoofers without loosing as much trunk space as possible. I need to purchase a box or design one that would fit the slant of the back seats to give me the most room. I have an idea of what i want and the total box volume has to be 1.5-3 cu.Ft. Here is my original design that will give me 1.73 cu.Ft in each side:

The box is a total of 40" wide, 19" tall and 15" deep, made out of 3/4 MDF and at that angle it should slide right under the slant of the seat.

If anyone has any better ideas on what I should do please let me know.

Also I have one more question, what is the easiest way to hook a subwoofer up to the stock 4th gen head unit? I'm not really looking to buy an aftermarket unit. Thanks

make it 18 high and 1 more inch deeper on top and bottom. or you can stuff alot of polyfill to compensate the thinner box if you need more volume.

depending on the subs you are getting i would recommend at least a 1" front baffle if not a 1.5" to be able to hold the weight of some of the subwoofers

A baffle is the front facing board that you screw the subs into right? (sorry for my illiteracy lol)

The subwoofers I'm getting are not too heavy and power hungry at 13lbs each. I wouldnt think that is too much for 15" speakers right? So were talking 26lbs total.
The speakers are only 6.4" deep

Your wanting to run 15"s with the stock head unit? Why not get some 10"s and a nice aftermarket head unit. I did that in a Camaro SS I had while my buddy had 2 15"s I ran 2 10"s and a better deck. My system sounded way better. Guess there will be a difference since I had a hatchback and the runner is a suv. To each their own.

I had considered doing this but I'm not concerned with the sound quality of the stock head unit, it sounds above average than many other stock units in other cars. I will be using an old school A/D/S high fidelity system which puts out 100 watts rms per channel. The reason for the 15's is because its simply going to move more air than the 10's and I want to get as much volume out of the 100 watts. The subs are 94.4 db sensitive at 1w/1m so they are definitely a nice pair.

Pretty much wasted a good amp, but u will need to get a line output converter, get the signal from the rear speaker leads. Its better to get an audio control for this type of aftermarket to oe intergration, but it is way better to buy a new deck. You can purchase some older 2012 decks cheaper now since the 2013 is out.

Okay well tell me this, is there any deck that makes use of the stock volume controls on the steering wheel and aux cable inside the console?

Volume has more to do with power than it does woofer size. If you are using these subwoofers, Speaker Detail | Eminence Speaker you will be under powering them buy 200 watts each. A person could easily get two correctly powered 10's to play louder than two severely under powered 15's. Driving these subs at higher volumes with the amp you mentioned is going to cause the amp to clip. (run out of power) This creates distortion which sounds bad and eventually will fry the voice coils.

Yes. Add the steering wheel adapter and run a new aux/ipod cable from the radio to the center console.

Metra aswc and the metra 70-8144, its all you need, the new decks out there have bluetooth and hd radio and pandora controls.

There are 8" subs on the market that can hit 151 db, 15's are fun but those being under powered and running with the stock non-jbl equipment is going to sound either mushy and bad at low levels or when you go to turn it up the amp will start to clip and those subs will be fed square waves and sound like crap for sure. The thicker baffle is to hold the weight of the subs but more importantly it is to minimize the vibrations going through the box. You want that box as rigid as possible so you hear the speaker installed and not the box buzzing and vibrating as well.

I see what you mean about the stock head unit but i dont see the underpowering as an issue. The setup I had before was two A/D/S SB7's which were 7.5" and they sounded great, they were rated for 150w rms but I only ran 50w rms into them each. SO i figure if i use the same high quality amp I have and bridge two channels to 100watts rms then i will have a nice clean sound, keeping in mind that I know they will clip if i turn it up to much. Also the sensitivity of my previous subs were about the same if not less. So I think it would be fine with an aftermarket unit and the 15's or something similair. Another reason I'm going with the 15's is because its frequency response. These subs go down to 27hz, and I know smaller speakers can, like my previous 7.5" subs could, but I always like them bigger in that field because to me you get a cleaner sound out of a larger speaker when its below 30ish hz. Also I am a member of DIYMA and have looked there also

I have this Rockford 10" powered by a punch amp and it is turned down on the deck to -8 and it still pounds hard
Plus I didn't loose too much space people can't believe it's just a 10" until I show them

Looks nice. I'm looking to hide each amp under each front seat and if I remove the back seats then I will build a box for a couple of 8's or a 10 on one side where the passenger foot well is. I use the truck in two seat mode 99.99% of the time hauling the dogs, mountain bikes and other crap so I think I'm just going to pull em out and build a flat load floor. We have other rides to haul folks in back seats when needed.

See the attachment for what I ended up with, went with the 12" eminators and a prefab box, it fits pretty well and I've cleaned up the wires a little since that pciture.

Id go with 2 sundown sa8 subs and a sundown amp.. will take minimal space and knock hard. Harder than most bs out there..
