Just bought this T4R with Eclipse AVN2210 HU (double-DIN). The TomTom is probably dead, and anyhow I'd prefer a GPS which is stand-alone and larger. And the text-msg LCD in the HU is unreadable unless the ambient light is just right. And the UI for the audio controls is way over-engineered and not at all intuitive.
So I'm looking for a cheap HU, with no GPS. And I hope to find one which is also cheap to have installed (plug & play with the current HU's wiring, without extensive disassembling of the dash). I'm content with the stock speakers, so I don't need a beefy amp. I don't want a CD-changer, just a single-disc player. And I want simple old-fashioned controls with physical dials and push-buttons, not a touch-screen. I just need "acceptable" low-distortion sound quality, not concert-hall or stadium sound, and decent FM reception, with a front aux port which I can use to connect a hands-free phone or MP3 USB.
Recommendations?
And even if you can't name a specific model, what do ppl currently think are the best manufacturers? (I know this changes over time, when some makers get taken over or start going down in quality control.)
And the best installers? (I'm roughly equidistant from NYC, New Haven and Danbury, CT. Chains in my area are Pep Boys, Best Buy, and PC Richard.)
