Suggestions for my massive rear dome light opening?

My T4R came equipped with an aftermarket overhead flip down screen and DVD player, which is great except I don't have kids, don't have DVD's, and it's broken. I took it all apart to find some broken pieces in the DVD drive that can't be repaired and I can't find parts for it anyway. I'm all in favor of deleting the option completely except for the gaping hole I have left in my headliner there -

I'd like to incorporate the dome lights still but what else could I mount up there to cover it up/make it usable?

About 10"x10". I can put a picture up later tonight when I'm back at finding out if this DVD unit also poached my rear cargo dome light power too.

Found the cut and disregarded flat 3 wire that was supposed to go to the rear dome lights just hanging out above the DVD player mount. Figured out which wire was which and hooked it all back up with the DVD player still functioning as my dome lights for the rear seat.

Also got the LED bulb from Slowgoat installed in the rear dome, everything is working great now (except for the DVD player, who cares). Time to do the front map-light mod next so it functions like a normal vehicle when doors open.

That should work. Your rear passengers will have something nice to look at. Just pick something large enough to cover the entire hole. :hello:

Welp, I got sick of bashing my head on the DVD player while sleeping on my sleeping platform this summer so tonight I got around to mounting some lights and a 3 position switch on a piece of galvanized sheet metal I found in my utility closet. A little industrial looking, but functional.

I don't know why parents don't go for the headrest/monitor all in one DVD thing vs installing these giant aftermarket ugliness on the ceiling. So many elegant solutions exist nowadays.

Get some grey pleather/vinyl from a craft store to wrap the steel and it will match the interior more closely and no one will even notice it. Also it will protect the sharp edges from catching a hand, forehead, etc.

I do not have kids yet but I would probably not go down this route with installing aftermarket DVD players in the 4Runner. Just seems bulky and unnecessary, my future kids can keep their brains engaged reading books or playing with iPad minis during road trips!
