Suggestions for shocks...

I have a 2004 Sport with the XREAS system and a Daystar spacer lift kit. I want to replace the shocks with good quality standard type that will give a smooth ride down the highway. I know everyone recommends Bilstein, but have read that they give somewhat of a harsher ride-don't want that. Any suggestions?

I know people love Billys and they are great shocks. But I had them on my Taco set at .85 and boy did they ruin the ride. It totally firmed up the ride beyond what I liked and made the ride very jiggly on the highway. Not sure if the billys behave differently on the T4R since it's considerably heavier.

I am curious if there are any trick systems such as magnetic/dual-valve shocks out on the market as aftermarket options?

If you just post "I'm looking for shocks" then you're going to get a thousand different opinions on what to get. Try looking at the sticky first:

I did search - and did find the suspension sticky before posting - but found all kinds of info regarding the Bilsteins, and all sorts of lifts. I just want to replace these XREAS shocks with a good shock/strut from O'Reillys or Advance Auto. Local Sear's, Oreilly's, Advance, and even the Dealership could not answer if a standard shock/strut would bolt up in place of these XREAS. I know Bilstein will because of the search I did, but did not find anyone with Monroe's, Ranchos, etc..
Sear's is telling me that the standard shock/strut will not bolt in its place?! I really don't think there is a difference but wanted to check with you guys first.

Any shock made for the non xreas 4runner will swap right in. I've read mixed reviews but KYB is one I hear about as a stock replacement. OEM non xreas shocks aren't to expensive so that's another option. I prefer the stiffer Bilsteins though.

A good option for you would be a set of OEM shocks/coils from a FJ cruiser, plenty of info and reviews if you search around.

We replaced the XREAS with Bilstein's. It pretty much keeps the same handling, but does sacrifice the ride quality a little bit IMO. Still, not a bad choice.

They make the Rancho rs9000xl that's adjustable. I had a set of the rears, wasn't real impressed.
