Sulfur Smell TSB for 2003 V6 question

Please, only owners of the V6 4runners need answer.

Have any owners of the 2003 V6 4runner had the Sulfur TSB performed on their trucks?

If so, has it eliminated the sulfer smell, or reduced it at all?

How long did it take? Did the dealership argue about it or simply do it when asked?

I am going to ask to have it done on my 4runner near the end of this month. I haven't really made any complaints about it to them, since most people have had this problem and there was no fix for it beyond getting the tailpipe turned.


But now that there appears to be a fix, I want to protect the resale value of the truck.

V6 TSB

I had the TSB done on my 2003 4R.

1. It eliminated 99.5% of the smell. The only time I smell faintly is going up a long hill for an extended period of time. Now I drive with my back window open.

2. It takes about 1.5 hours total. My dealer also found another warranty problem that I did not notice so it took 2 hours including that.

3. My dealer was great. I sent them an e-mail and referred to the TSB. They verified I was eligible and ordered the parts. Then they called me when the parts came in and gave me a next day appointment. It was great.

In all, I am 100% happy that I had it done. I would say it eliminated the smell except in the most extreme circumstance and then the smell is only 10% of what it was.

Nice dealership

You have a good dealership. My dealer will not do any warranty repair unless a tech can duplicate the problem. They wouldn't do the sulfur smell TSB, even though they know about it.

As an example, it took 3 months for them to replace a defective stereo headunit, which was very intermittently cutting out and not producing any sound. They wouldn't replace it until they saw it! It happened several times but never when I was near the dealership, or on my way to work. I had to have it happen on the road, while driving home after work, and leave the truck running ouside their service dept. , while I waited for a technician to come see it. 10 minutes.

My truck is not making the sulfur smell as bad as it used to though. I still would like to have a reduction in the smell that is there though.

Yup...I just picked up my '03 Limited V6 4Runner during lunch today, b/c I had them perform the TSB...About 2 months ago, I had my 4runner in for an oil change/tire rotation and mentioned to the service person that I've noticed a rotten egg(sulfer-like) smell whenever I accelerated hard or during occasional city driving...I mentioned to him that I also knew about the TSB, and he called me later in the day and said that they'd do the service without even flinching...It took a couple of days for them to receive the parts, since they had to order them...About a month ago, the first time I took my car in for the service, I was there promptly at 8am; Only to find out around 11am that they had ordered the parts for the V8 4runner and didn't realize it until the had pulled off the original exhaust system...So, they put the old parts back on, and they reordered the correct parts...This morning I dropped it off at 8:30am and picked it up around noon...I put the rear window down, along with all of the windows, and haven't noticed any sulfer smell, yet...

Here's the description of the problem they submitted:

"The customer states the exhuast has a rotten egg smell"

SOP IN CATALYTIC CONVERTOR MALFUNCTION, ECU SOFTWARE MALFUNCTION; REPROGRAMMED COMPUTER, REPLACED CATALYTIC CONVERTERS

Here's a list of the parts that they used:

1 - 17410-31480 Pipe Assy, Exhaus
1 - 17450-31050 Pipe Assy, Exhaus
2 - 90080-43036 Gasket, Exhaus P
1 - 17451-74051 Gasket, Exhaus P
1 - 90917-06083 Gasket, Exhaus P

I'll let you know if the Rotten Egg Smell comes back!

I HAND delivered the TSB that says they need to R&R the converter and reprogram the flash on the ECU. Only THEN would they do the work

I have a 04 V6 SE that has a strong sulphur smell when I accelerate. My VIN is about a couple hundred over the range. I am curious if they would still honor the TSB.

My VIN falls well within their specified range. They just don't want to do it. The dealership I bought from in town is NOT well known for great service, either in the salesroom or the service dept.. Only reason I bought from them was because the next closest Toyota stealership was 12 miles away.

My exhaust actually has tamed down quite a bit in recent weeks. It only gives the stink if I'm hard on the gas. Otherwise, I only smell what would be considered "normal" exhaust fumes with all the windows down. It will be Fall and Winter soon, so it won't matter till next Spring. I'll re-evaluate it then, and resubmit for the TSB if I can't stand it.

Those are for 03 and 04 only? Mine is 05, where do I find the TSB for that? Or does one not exist?

There is one separate for the 2005 v8 and v6 each. I'm pretty sure it's been posted on the forums before, so I'd say just try to do some searches...
