Sulphur smell and dealer

I just dropped off my 04 4Runner at the dealership to have a couple of things done and get the TSB work done for the sulpher smell.

One of the service contacts called me back and said there were no TSBs coming up for my VIN, he was also quite rude about it as well.

I asked for his fax number and sent him a copy of the TSB.

Within 10 minutes he called back and asked if I had noticed the problem with the smell. I told him I had (DUH!!!) and he said okay. He was also very contrite on the second call.

Why do they have to be this way?

In a way, I could see why they wouldn't volunteer this information (not that I agree with it), but I had the TSB numbers with me when I dropped it off.

I had asked for one or two other TSB's work to be done, but I guess I can forget that.

Is there any place to get the TSBs other than paying for them at Edmund's?

It depends on the dealership bro. I took it to my dealership and I had the TSB printed out and tucked in my glove compartment. When I spoke to the Service Writer and mentioned it smelled like rotten eggs, he mentioned there was a Sulfur TSB. I played "dumb" and let him explain it to me. They had to order the parts so I just scheduled a service date.

Not all dealerships will dick you around, but its probably the norm...

Ir could also be that the person just before you tried to pull something past the dealership and the guy was just taking his frustration out on you. For example, I know of one place where a guy got his Tacoma engine submerged enough to such water in the intake, then tried to have it fixed under warranty as a defective engine.

Since he was contrite on the second call, I'd take that as a good sign and that he really felt bad about how he had treated you. And it sounds like they will be taking care of you in the end.

One thing that can help is to try to get to know the service manager. That way, you have someone on your side if anything goes wrong.
