Sunday Dec 20th Recovery Technique Run
SEE THE FULL TRIP PLANNING THREAD HERE Post up or PM me if you want to go. If you havn't been able to save up for a new front bumper and a winch yet this is a good opportunity to learn about non-winch recoveries.

If any of you yahoo's are going to be around the Sunday before Christmas and want to join on this run the more the merrier. Meet at 10AM at the Conoco exit 252 (Evergreen Parkway) off I-70. Bring a light lunch because we are going to be going to the Ameristar for crablegs, Shrimp, Chinese, Mexican, full desert bar etc. after the run. The cost at the Ameristar is $18 and it includes a softdrink and all you can eat. The trail is going to be Yankee Hill and we're going with the full intention of doing several recoveries. I think the Ameristar opens for dinner around 4:30PM.
I picked this trail since it's close to the food but also because there should be lots of snow and trees to play in. Since the trail will be impassible in some spots I thought this would be a good time to practice some recovery techniques and to press on into fresh powder where there are no tracks yet in the trail.
In true Co4o tradition this might be another way to help you spend your money
Normally guys wait until the bumper and winch are on before replacing the steel with synthetic. In the below two recovery techniques you can buy and use your synthetic line before you even have your winch.
One technique I want to do in particular involves a synthetic rope, a snatch block and two rigs. The idea is to use what you have when you don't have a winch. For example, if you have an uphill slope that is so steep that you are spinning all four tires, you can use basic gear to keep moving forward.
Attach the line to the stuck rig, go through a snatch block on an uphill tree, and back down to the free rig. The free rig drives down as the stuck rig drives up. Both rigs counter balance each other out allowing a recovery and uphill movement for the stuck rig.
The 2nd recovery technique is for a situation when you find yourself stuck in deep snow and there are no trees to anchor off of. In this case you dig (or possibly just pack the snow with footsteps) a trench in the shape of a loop wide enough to fit a yank strap in. Having the yank strap distribute the load over a wide area allows you to take advantage of the weight and resistance of the snow. Connect this anchored loop back to a winch or a snatch block going to a 2nd rig for the recovery.
I'm guessing that most or none of us have done these before (including me) so hopefully it'll be a good learning experience.
I have two snatch blocks so if someone has another we can try a triple block which give near to a 4 to 1 purchase. We might be able to pull a rig out with man power alone. Should be a fun day. Bring a change of clothes, good snow gear, and an appetite! Post up if you can make it!
Meeting Place. Conoco 10AM Sunday the 20th.
