Sunroof Blew Out!

I was driving down the highway (50 mph) with only my two rear passenger windows rolled halfway down.

All of a sudden the inside of the vehicle started getting a weird resonance. Major pressure differences or something. Sounded like a low frequency going on and off. Hard to explain.

I went to roll down the rear window but before I could my sunroof EXPLODED!

It shattered and a hole of about 5 inches in diameter blew out.

Has this happened to any of you guys before?

This is NUCKIN FUTS!

I'm calling Toyota in the morning to see if Warranty will cover it.

Check the 4th gen and general section, I think I have seen a thread with this same subject recently.

How can you stand to drive with only the rear windows down? The wind buffeting is horrible. My old Taco was the same way.

yes this can happen it sound's like a helicopter and the pressure can build up and boom. its crazy. but with the glass at the wright temperature and the pressure.

Must have been a fluke. The buffeting from the 2 windows down feels kind of sketchy to begin with. Maybe a freak pressure change in the air? Chinook? Weird.

All I can say is it's Friday the 13th.

I've heard it before, but it got real bad, quick. Must have been while I was changing my speed.

The worst part was that I almost got glass is my ice cream!

Yes, this has happened to someone else on the forum, post a while back. Same thing, windows down the highway. Yikes!

You can find posts about exploding sunroofs on just about every car forum out there. Usually at some point a rock or something hit the glass and weakened it a bit then temp or pressure change or something like that causes it to explode. Just google "exploding sunroof" and you'll see what I mean.

Sunroof blew out

This is most likely an insurance claim (comprehensive) and not a warranty problem. About 6 years ago I had the rear window do the same thing on an older 4Runner. My insurance covers comprehensive damage 100% at no additional premium costs. So it would cost you whatever your deductible is on comprehensive coverage.

Out of curiosity, this was a Toyota Factory unit and not an aftermarket dealer installed unit? In the 4th gen version of this thread we found that A LOT of the people who's sunroofs blew out had aftermarket units.

Something else I've noticed is a lot of these "special trims" & "aftermarket add-ons" installed by the dealer seem to be a common practice on the East Coast? I haven't seen many "dealer specials" on our side of the country.

All my vehicles have had that noise when air pressure is colliding with each other.

My Tahoe included . Its so annoying , why would you even drive it while its doing it. I would have adjusted the windows or cracked the sunroof open or better yet put the back windows up.

Well to clear some things up...

I was going through town. The speedlimit is 50 mph (80 km/h). It's not really a full on highway.

The 4runner is completely stock. Wasn't an aftermarket sunroof at all.

Why would I drive down the highway with that annoying sound? I wouldn't. It came on so fast and before I had a chance to fix it, the sunroof shattered.

I called Toyota today and they said they'd fix it for me once they get a new unit on order. This shouldn't have to go through insurance.

I'm just glad the kid wasn't in the back seat.

On a side note, whatever happened those? Last I heard the military scrapped trying to replace the Apache with the Comanche and just left it at that...

Just because you bought it from the dealer like that doesn't mean its "stock" a lot of the 4th gen guys had "stock" 4Runners from the dealer where they installed an aftermarket sunroof in before the vehicle went on the front line. Just to inform you. :)
