Sunroof Blew Out!

On a side note, whatever happened those? Last I heard the military scrapped trying to replace the Apache with the Comanche and just left it at that...
Just because you bought it from the dealer like that doesn't mean its "stock" a lot of the 4th gen guys had "stock" 4Runners from the dealer where they installed an aftermarket sunroof in before the vehicle went on the front line. Just to inform you.
Thanks but don't all Trail Edition 4 Runners come with a factory sunroof?

Well its been a few months but here's an update on the situation:
I ended up buying a new piece of glass ($850 Canadian), which apparently was the Dealer's cost.
Add another $150 for install.
The install shop did a poor job because they didn't vacuum out the old glass. I just found this out by operating the sunroof. I just took it back to the shop to get them to pull it out again and remove all the old glass.
Everything works fine except when I'm sliding the glass pane forward, to close - it hits the arms from the bug shield and then stops and goes back to open. I think it's getting too much friction on these arms and the safety kicks in. The shop has no lube to put on. So now I need to see what Toyota uses to lube the tracks of their sunroofs to help it out a bit. I'm thinking silicon spray won't hurt.

Sounds like the Kia has a known problem, but my guess is since we aren't seeing tons of reports of exploding 4Runner sunroofs on the forum (as opposed to something like the driveshaft clunky thumpy thing) that yours was most likely a rock chip like the AMA guy says.

That article is mildly humorous! When mine blew out, I was laughing. I thought it was the coolest explosion ever, until my brain realized that it was going to be costly.
It may or may not have been a rock chip. Who knows. It's over now. I just hope it doesn't happen to others.

Thanks! I'm pretty well positive I have this. At least it's a known problem. A couple bugs to iron out and then my 4R will be set for life.

You never know how you'll respond in an emergency so happy with this one.
They don't last for 6 or 7 years then fail. You probably had a micro crack or a chip t that grew and the pressure was just enough to pop it.
I had my cat crack my windshield. It was find by what I could see, then he cracked. Was from a tiny little chip that compromised the integrity.
