sunroof closed = wind noise

Notice a LOT of wind noise when driving today when I closed the sunroof. Noise goes away if I bump the switch closed after the sunroof is closed (in order to raise the back of the sunroof panel just a little bit). This brings it up flush with roof.

Seems when the sunroof is fully closed the rear of the panel is a quarter/half inch below the edge of the roof cut out.

Is there an easy way to adjust how far the sunroof goes down (so as to make it flush with the roof line) ? Any chance of a water leak if it is not fully closed ?

This just started today so I'm sure something came loose or went out of adjustment.

Mine was doing something similar, except it happened when using the tilt and then closing it. I had to open the sunroof normally and close it to stop the wind noise.

When I installed the K&N FIPK II, I had to reprogram the windows and sunroof. Suddenly, the problem went away.

Net - I think it's somehow gotten out of adjustment and needs to be reprogrammed.

This may be a stupid suggestion, but it happened to me one day on the way to work... I thought there was something wrong with my roof because I closed it and got a loud wind noise.

What I didn't realize for about 2-3 miles on the highway was that my wife had barely cracked open her window the night before on our way home and forgot to close it. When I shut the sunroof, it changed the airflow characteristics and made a loud howling/whistling noise that I THOUGHT was coming from the sunroof.

Check to make sure all of your windows are 100% closed just to be sure before you start worrying about the sunroof.

Checked all windows and rubber seals including rear door - nothing open or torn.

Then discovered that bumping the tilt a bit to get the movable panel level with the roof surface cures the noise.

My theory is that something caused the moveable panel to seat down too far when in closed position. I'm looking to fix that something. After checking one more thing:

Next step will be to examine other 4r's to see if their movable panel is going down so low along the back edge as to leave a high ledge between it and the roof surface. Or I could ask on this forum I suppose...

Okay, try this...

Open the sunroof all the way by pressing the button and HOLDING it down for the entire duration of it opening and keep holding it for a few more seconds after that. This should reset the auto feature. It may be stopping in the wrong place. When I had my sunroof motor disconnected for a period of time while trying to tap into the power connector up in the roof for my V1, my sunroof auto feature stopped working entirely and the sunroof was hard to get stopped exactly where it was supposed to be. I ended up having to reset it and it's been fine since that point.

All the holding down the switch an "reprogramming" I tried did not work. But it has been working fine the last few days. When you close the sunroof the last part of the cycle involves the rear kicking up an inch or so. It remembers to do that now.

Wonder what happened. Think I'll inspect and lube the works this weekend.

Well after my first post on this issue several months ago the problem cleared itself (in other words the moon/sun roof is now flush - not recessed - with the roof of the 4Rnr when closed).

Yesterday, after months of perfect operation, the same failure mode developed and I'm back in the same mode of trying to figure out how to get it working right again.

I have the same problem..Sunroof is about 1/2 to 1/4 " shy of being flush with the roof when closed.

Last time I was at the dealer they told me aroud $200 to adjust it. So now I just tap the button to make it flush. I just tried to reset is as mentioned above .. No Luck..


Also I never have had a problem with it leaking.

If you are still in warranty you should take it over to the dealer and have them adjust it for you. The spec on the height difference between the roof and the glass is 0.264" +/- 0.028". If you have a half inch difference, you are out of spec and they should be able to adjust it for you.

Try disconnecting the negative battery terminal for a few minutes. And then reinitialize (fully open and close while holding the buttons) your driver's side window, rear window and moonroof. My guess it has something to do with the auto open/close feature on the moonroof.

The latest in this long running saga:

Looks like a trip to the dealer for some warranty work is in my very near future. The sunroof will close half way, make a horrible noise then reverse itself and park wide open. Nothing obviously wrong that I can see...

Sounds like the tracks are jammed or the cable mechanism is broken. Definately a trip to the dealer.
