Sunroof not working

Nothing.

button doesn't do anything at all! What a bummer.


2001 4runner SR5 with 185k.


Randomly the sunroof stopped working. I pulled all the fuses and they all check out. I unplugged the switch and plugged it back it and still.... nothing.


Any idea what this could be?

Where should I start?

FSM (pg 1476) says if sliding roof doesn't open check suspect areas:

1. POWER Fuse (Driver Side J/B)
2. Power MAIN Relay (Driver Side J/B)
3. Sliding Roof Control Switch with Relay
4. Sliding Roof Motor
5. Wire Harness

Wonder where that main relay is?

Or even the motor.... ugh.

My moon roof was open during a car wash.

It doesn't work now.

I checked the fuse(s) as listed in the prior post (thank you for that info). The fuses look just fine.

I'm not sure what to do now...

Any help would be 'greatly' appreciated.

Never say that. While you can see if a fuse is blown, sometimes, you can't SEE if it is good. Use a meter, test light, or swap in a known good fuse.
 
Yeah I'd check the fuses and run a meter. then turn the key to accessory and try and open the roof, see if you can hear the motor trying to turn. Worst case its just a blown motor if your fuse is fine.

Example, mine wont open right now but I can hear the motor trying to turn. I've fixed issues like this on other cars before and the line is just jammed and or seized in the guide tubes.

I'll fix mine later on and do a write up.

If you can hear your moon/sunroof motor trying to turn that's a good sign. Proceed to the manual and attempt the repair. It's an annoying one as you have to strip roof carpet, take out a few moldings, remove run visors etc. The motor is literally just in front of the moon/sunroof and the guide tube and line run around the sides of the glass piece itself.

I Can Hear The Motor

I can hear the motor trying to open it, although it is just for a moment, then it stops.

The Moon Roof itself doesn't move. The good news is that it is in a closed position.

You previously wrote, "Proceed to the manual and attempt the repair". What manual are you referencing?

That would be our Factory Service manual or you see it abbreviated FSM on the forum. Each year has a different one. Mostly they are the same but there are some differences over the years of the 3rd gen series. That manual gives you the troubleshooting and how to take it apart and make repairs. :)
