Sunroof problems

Kind of a long story so please bear with me...

I was on the road last Friday with my sunroof open. When I pulled onto the interstate, the wind got to be too loud so I closed my sunroof. I shouldn't have closed it with the wind blowing so hard, but I did it before thinking. Anyway, it slid forward all the way but did not slide up to seal flush with the top; I'm assuming this had something to do with the force of the wind on it. I pulled over to try to close it the rest of the way, but it seemed that the controls went screwy... I would have to hold the button for it to close or open, and if I held the button too long when closing, the roof would keep going up until it was in the tilted open position. I played with it for a couple of minutes, and it eventually started working normally again. I've used it a few times since then and did not notice anything unusual. Should I be concerned about this? I would have my dealer check it out while it is still under warranty, but I fear that having them mess with it may cause more problems. So unless it's strongly recommended that I get it looked at, I'm probably going to leave it be as long as it continues to work properly.

I dont know if it was caused by the wind but I have seen it where the auto function of the sunroof stops working..to fix it you have to manually go through the whole open to close to the rear open and back again and it should reset itself. I dont know what really causes this or if its the same problem you are having but it does it sporadically every once and a while. Once you go through the full sequence with the roof it should regain the auto feature and be fine from there on. Hope this helps

Thanks, that helps a lot!

No mine did that about 2 months ago. it was working fine and then i went to close it one day and it made a loud popping noise and just stopped half way open. I had to actually push it closed and it made all kinds of noises when i did that. Then i also lost the auto function. So the next day on my way to the dealership to get it fixed i tried to open it and it wouldnt open at all. So they fixed it and now it acts kinda goofy every once and a while. But hey it works! hope you get your prob solved

hey, benhar, is your runner the 2005 model?? i know the most consistent problem with all new 4runners is the sunroof. but i figured toyota would have fixed the design and assemble technique by this point...maybe it's their supplier??? i definitely want a moonroof in mine (still waiting for end of the year deals), but i've only read from 2 or 3 guys on this forum who have NOT had ANY problems with their moonroof, this makes me nervous.

i have not had any problems......sunroof rattling was the main problem and that should be fixed already. people usualyl don't post to say things are working fine. ;):

Other than the headliner rattle, no problems with my sun/moon roof (I never did figure out how you tell the difference). But, then I very rarely use mine.

a quick detour... how much did your 265/70R Revos cost you, Tech?? i went to Costco last night just to see their price, should i buy them sometime in the future...the guys quoted me 165 a piece!! that's, 650 all together??? no alignment included...i'm in southern california ...

Mine is a 2004 Sport. I'm hoping it's a one time occurance, but even if not I would still get a sunroof if I had it to do over again, so don't let me deter you from getting one :)

Yup, the sunroof has been the most problematic part on my car. I had the infamous rattle, now my seals are rubbing against the paint and making noises. I've also had to have my switch replaced as have gotten way too many weird pop and cracking noises.

It just sounds like your auto function needed to be reset. Just hold the switch until it tilts all the way up, wait a few seconds then let go.

Something similar happened with mine when it was about two months old. But I did the same thing you did- play with the buttons a bit- and then it started to work normally, and I haven't had a problem since. Probably no harm in having the dealer look at it just in case, but hopefully it will work fine for you like it has for me.

thanks for the info, trd 4runner.... i want to the sunroof as an emergency exit, when i pull into tight parking spots...i would than have the back rolled down window or the sunroof both as options.

I believe the difference is a sunroof is all metal and a moonroof has glass.

I got mine at a local Firestone dealer in Oct 04. I don't have the invoice with me right now, but that's about what I paid for mine. That price, as I remember, included all the usual extras (mounting, balancing, valve stems, and a road hazard warranty).

For my type of use, they are the best tires I have ever bought. Very good in snow, stick like glue on wet roads, and haven't let me down off road yet. I don't do any serious off roading, mostly logging roads and jeep trails when hunting.

Sunroof Issue

Guys,

I think i have the same problem. I read through this thread, and have seen two directions on how to reset the roof. Im going to try both of them right now, but can anyone verify those directions.

Thanks

I know one way is to open it half way then close it completely but hold your finger on the close button. Once it's closed keep holding the button for an additional second. I think this is for if the battery is disconnected though. I disconnected my battery once when changing my parking lights and the automatic feature on my drivers window, sunroof, and rear window stopped working. Had to reset all of 'em. Not sure if this will help you or not for your issue though :(.

my sun roof switch is a one touch open and close. I don't have to hold it to open or close.

They're all one touch open/close but in order to reset it (like if the battery is disconnected for a certain amount of time) you have to keep the button pressed down.
