Sunroof rattles?

Used to have this issue with my 4th gen sometimes. I would just open it a little/close it again and it would go away. Its also worth mentioning I had a Yakima rack with a wind deflector that may have helped the cause.
It seems that over time it does this, but a quick open/close of the moon roof will fix it.

When I had ski carriers on my factory rack, my sunroof 'buffeted' like hell in all positions. With no ski carriers, no noise whatsoever. When I went to the Gobi with the wind fairing in front, it remains quiet when closed and fully open, just a little wind noise when tilted.
Its funny how the slightest change affects the airflow / design of our bricks.

Thanks for this. I removed both right and left pieces and my ride home from work was thankfully rattle free. I have been trying to track this down for sometime now even certain tones from the radio would make these things rattle.

I complained about a rattle under warranty and they spent 4 days tracking it down, "couldn't find it" and gave it back to me. I of course returned it after 2 days, they kept it another week. Again "thought they fixed it," except this time they made a tech ride with me on a test drive before taking it home. While I drove the tech finally found the sound, fiddled with the plastic piece, and eventually removed it completely. They kept it another day trying to find the exact problem and never did, but they ordered a factory new one and replaced it. I haven't had the issue since.
Yea those guys don't do well with small things , if the check engine light in not on there stumped lol. It's been my experience that me not knowing anything and trying as hard as I can , usually do a better job than somebody who supposedly knows what they're doing but doesn't care.

Pops when closed, rattles when tilted up.
I had someone grease, lube, inspect the seals, and do all manner of crap to it.
Nothing helped.
It's only one of like 5 distinct squeaks and rattles, but it's the loudest.

I also had a squeak that took forever to find. Turns out it was two different ones, one bolt frame to body wasn't torqued to spec, the other was a broken retaining clip on a fender trim piece that had to be ordered and painted to match.

I have a squeak that I have yet to track down, it's really fwording unnerving. Anytime I close any of the doors or hatch, or if I'm driving down a bumpy road I can hear the squeak. I'm wondering if it's the body to frame bolt coming loose. Anyway, your input would be appreciated. Thanks!

Could be, although with the door closings in there, it be more apt to check smaller things first. It would take a lot of force to make a loose body bolt squeak, unless you routinely Hulk-Smash! your doors closed them is doubt it would be the bolt. Tightening the bolt didn't fix my squeak, it was something the techs found while trying to locate it. They were able to reproduce the squeak on the trim piece just by wobbling it when parked. Good luck, tracking down sounds is a PITA!

I found this thread when searching for a sunroof issue, similar to what some of the folks describe here. However, my issue is that when opening\closing, not while driving, it rattles. I think the fix would grease. Not sure what type, or if there are any DIYs that would be helpful.
I looked from above and side when opening and closing the sunroof, nothing comes close to being obstructive. So I am at a point where grease might be the only solution. Any suggestions?

My sunroof started to rattle this weekend. Over the past day I have been testing it and it seems to rattle when it is opened AND the shade is moved all the way back.
Closed/Shade closed = no rattle
Closed/Shade opened = no rattle
Tilted/Shade opened = no rattle
Tilted/Shade closed = no rattle
1/4 opened/Shade 1/4 opened = no rattle
1/4 opened/Shade fully opened = rattle
1/2 opened/Shade 1/2 opened = rattle
1/2 opened/Shade fully opened = rattle
Full open/Shade full open = most rattles
I keep trying to drive about on rough roads to see if it does it in any of these other configurations but so far it seems to be just a combination of open with shade back.

I had a rattle which was fixed under warranty. The sunroof motor was rattling and the dealer claimed they wrapped it with felt and resolved the issue. The accordion plastic on the outer edges is the source of my new noise. The plastic rubber seems dry or brittle. I like having the moonroof cracked but the wind and road vibe rattles the accordion stuff...
