Super Charger - chicken out last minute

I had the appointment, the parts where in, and I was going to pull the trigger and install the super charger in my 2003 4runner. I then realized that I may be getting in over my head. I am just worried that adding 100 hp and 100 ft lbs of torque to an SUV is probably asking for trouble. Like can the tranny handle this? the drive train? Will this over heat while off roading, etc.

So I think I am just going to buy the new Dodge Challenger when in comes out in 07 or 08 and make that my speed demon toy, and keep 4runner as a practical vehicle/off roader.

are you speaking about the TRD supercharger? if so, then everything is built to accept the extra horsepower i would do it if i were you, hell, im waiting for cash flow to install the supercharger on my 02 with nearly 100k on the block... we will see if the money comes before then

Superchargers are not like turbos or N2O, if it was a TRD then you would have been fine.

TRD built this supercharger for your truck specifically and put in enough R&D to make it safe. The V8 has a transmission cooler so it shouldn't over heat. Also, if there are any problems you'll be backed 100% by Toyota since you are buying the parts from them as well as Toyota is installing it. If I were in your place, I would not have hesitated on the Supercharger.

the new Challenger is going to be nice (if they don't ruin it like the did the Charger). Hopefully an SRT version will be in theshort future.

Ah you got to admit, the Charger is not all bad. Especially the new RT - what does it push? 500 Horses? Damn that is sweet.

425hp 6.1liter engine. $40,000 and keeps up if not surpasses the Cadillac in some aspects for less money. I may get the opportunity to drive one along with the SRT8 Grand Cherokee. How i wish my 4Runner had 400hp....

I've been beating the snot out of my TRD supercharged PreRunner for 80K miles and it has not skipped a beat.

The only problem is, it is a POS Chrysler!

They cleaned up their act big time. Of course, not as reliable as a Toyota, but much more so than 10 years ago. My entire neighborhood seemed to be on the 300C addiction, and no one seems to be having any issues.

The SC should only provide more power when boost is actually being made otherwise it would really reduce gas mileage. Most SCs have a valve that prevents boost being built under low throttle position and is only activated when a certain amount of throttle % is reached.

Depending on what type of blower they their power differently. The Roots type, which is what TRD uses, makes more power all the time (right off idle). The centrifugal type makes power more like a turbo, you have to spool it up a little, but they make more power. The roots type trades some power for reliability.

I have one in my 02 and there is power all the time. According to TRD, w/ the SC I get the same HP at 1750 RPM (183), as the engine would produce in total w/o the SC. My gas mileage actually went up a little because with the SC I have enough power so I don't have to down shift to keep up the speed on hilly sections of freeway. Of couse, if you drive it hard, the mileage goes through the floor.

This is kind of a surprising thread as people here feel that the s/c is all you need. I've done a ton of research and asked a ton of questions about the s/c on the 3rd gen runners and from what I've gathered, you need the following for the s/c to run efficiently and not ruin your engine or auto tranny:

1. S/C of course;
2. Some type of fuel mods (TRD 7th injector or URD fuel mods). Without these, you run the chance of running too lean and causing detonation to your motor;
3. A tuning system (SMT-6 or others) to make sure you're running the s/c at the right boost for your gas octane, fuel/air mixture, etc.;
4. A valve body upgrade for the auto tranny so that you don't blow out 1st and 2nd gear at WOT;
5. A tranny cooler. Although the 4runners have stock tranny coolers, it's always recommended to upgrade.

All this together would run a cool $5k. I decided not rather than go for it. Many love their s/c'd runners but I couldn't swallow the cost. For those that have had no issues, you are supposedly in the minority as TRD would not have invented the 7th injector if the s/c was fine. BTW, TRD is more of a marketing company with most of its products being made by other manufacturers just slapping on the logo.

I'm not here to argue so if you want to post a rebuttal, I won't answer. This is just my two cents.

Not true! I've had the supercharger since it left the stealer new. When stealer installed new it carries a 5 year/60K mile warranty, and the cost was included in the financing. No other mods were done, NONE! In the 80K+ miles so far I have done absolutely NOTHING to this vehicle, not even a blower belt. The motor has NEVER skipped a beat or knocked, EVER! The 7th injector was added/designed to make even more power. I have ENJOYED this great mod for 8 years and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants tire melting power out of the 3.4 V6 with absolutely no problems or lose of gas mileage. I would install a TRD blower on my VVT-i V8 tomorrow if it was available. It is the best and most reliable power mod I have ever added to any vehicle. My other vehicle is capable of 200mph. I get 150mph out of 3rd gear and have 3 more gears.

+1 and my buddy at the local Toyota dealer in the shop can attest. He's put in at least 50 and has never seen one problem with any of them.
