super easy dual climate mod

I bought a new limited climate control cluster off of this board a week ago. I needed a new one in my wife's T4R because of a botched CB install about a year ago. So a member on here had limited info center cluster with the matching finish as my wife's runner. I bough tit and installed it, looks good as new.

Well.... now I have this extra messed up cluster, so I pulled the main circuit board out of it along with the center control (dual temp) and swapped it into my SR5 runner. took about 5 min, and now i have dual climate controls just like the limited.

Overall I am pretty pleased....super simple mod (if you can find one of the limited clusters)

Does it actually regulate the temperature differences from side to side? I figured the lesser models wouldn't have the dampers or other temperature control mechanical parts..

I was not sure until this morning, I set the drivers side on 85 and the pass side on 70... I could clearly tell that my side was much warmer. I have no idea how it works. I know I tried to replace just the knob that has the control in it, however the entire board inside the cluster is slightly different where the knob hooks up. So i pulled the guts out of my SR5 controller and stuck in the dual climate guts and it seems to work just like my other truck.

it works, I don't really care how. I suspect that the blend doors, and blowers are all the same on all models. I did notice that the climate control plugs were the same, both had the same amount open lugs on the bottom. if I had a pin-out I could check to see witch wire transferred heat and cool between sides.

I have a feeling that the limited controller allows the blend door to stop between open and closed allowing more or less heat and cool to flow in any direction. The TIS parts diagram only shows two different heater controllers and one (superseded) blower motor and blend actuator.

can you do one side at ac cold, and the other at hot like max? thats whould show the real test.

I didn't do this as a mod, but because I needed a replacement for mine. After it was installed and I started messing with it to see if it worked I noticed that the donor I had was dual climate. I tested it out a few times but I didn't feel any difference. So I never bothered again since.

I have a 2003 V8 sport, the donor came from a totalled Limited not sure what year or engine.

On my way home tonight I will check it out again. Maybe I didn't have enough variation or didn't wait long enough.

Were you using temp of 85 and 70 with or without the AC on?

i did not turn the AC on....I am not sure if you can run AC and heat at the same time in either of my vehicles. I have never tried it in my limited, seems a bit counter intuitive to heat one side of the cabin and cool the other. I will try it on cool later today and hit it with a laser to see what temp I am truly getting. this should be more accurate than the old had over the vent test...lol

I Have to weigh in here:

Just installing a Limited Cluster DOES NOT give you dual climate control. It's 15X more involved than that. The HVAC ducts are different (blend doors....door that regulate how much heat comes in from the heater core, on Limiteds, there are 2 doors for passenger and driver, on others like the SR5 & Sport, only 1 door). Electronically, apart from the display, there's a A/C module thingy. Again, only Limited models have this.

Well, having the extra lights/buttons does make it look cooler, so I say its a WIN! But, functionally speaking, it won't work. If it makes you feel better, I installed factory Bluetooth buttons on my steering wheel. Turns out, I can't get them to function. BUT, I am leaving them there (looks cool)

tried it with a temp laser.....drivers side on high pass on low both vents aprox 91deg.

and to make matters worse, I no longer display outside temp...I revoke my first post...

I did some research on this and think I found the difference in the system. I looked at two different parts diagrams for toyota between the sr5 and limited hvac system. All of the dampers and blower motor parts are the same. The only difference I found was that the two evap parts were difference

These are the two different part numbers. Granted spending over a grand on this is crazy but it seems this is a little more simple than replacing every part of the system (only other part would be the climate control cluster)

For those interested. I’m running a limited with a non-dual climate console with no problems. 1 I never used the dual climate, and 2 I love having my info center show my mileage remaining in my tank, and the bottom right the outside temp. The dual climate panel is a little nicer, but functionality is not there for me.

Sorry to bring up an old thread! But I was browsing as I’m looking to do a dual climate swap on my base model SR5.. is it as simple as swapping a limited circuit board into my dash unit? Or do I need extra parts and will the original plug fit into the new boards plug? Also I was searching and looking to see but some people say they rather see their mpg, miles, and temperatures outside on the little LCD screen but wouldn’t you still have that?

I'm honestly not trying to be rude but you need to read the replies in this thread. It requires a good bit more than just the electronics. And you will lose some of the displays on the screen. Again, no disrespect, just clarifying.
