Super-HD liftgate struts?

You guys are both using imprecise terms. I believe what [MENTION=51868]MeBe4running[/MENTION] is saying is that the same force is required to open and close the hatch with the HD struts. Without the weight of the ladder (thus reducing the mass of the hatch), the kinetic energy increases because of the increased velocity of the hatch with the HD struts.

HD struts + ladder = normal open/close
HD struts - ladder = violent open/close

I'll figure-out how to graph it using ASCII shortly. :gun6:

There are only three ways you can make a rear lift gate gas shock "Heavier Duty:"

1. Increase the gas pre-charge pressure.
The result would be (without adding any weight to the lift gate) it would open quicker and it would be harder to close. It would also increase the stress on the mounting points. If you did add weight to the lift gate, it would operate closer to "normal" but the increased stress would still be there. Would it cause something else like the mounting points to fail? Impossible to know without all the data.

2. Keep gas pre-charge the same but increase the inside diameter of the cylinder.
By doing this, you would be able to lift a heavier load also, but it would still stress the mounts more. In this case it would still open at the same rate of speed as the stock shocks but be harder to close.

3. Keep the bore and the pre-charge the same but add better components, like seals, rod wipers, tubing and rod material, etc. This will add longevity to the cylinder life but it would not be able to lift any heavier loads.

If you guys want the formulas just ask.

As promised, here is my personal review of the HD struts (just got them today in the mail!):

installation is fairly easy, done it by myself with no help beside my head holding the door up. Just look up the retaining system on the new struts you receive to know how to dismount your old ones.

The new struts open the door much more firmly than the stock ones, but I didn't notice that it opens the door faster. What I really like about the is that there are like 3 ''stages'' of opening speed. Normal speed for like 80% of the travel, then slower for the next 10% and much slower for the last 10%.

As for the ease of closing, I would say they are just a little firmer than the stock ones brand new. But much stiffer than my stock ones that were getting soft. I can still close the door with 1 hand by giving it enough force.

Great buy, I don't even remember the price I paid since it really wasn't an expensive buy compared to the stock toyota ones.
