Super White Owners, is your paint peeling? Take the poll!

I am looking at purchasing a new leftover 2019 TRD Pro as my next vehicle.

Initially I was looking at a TRD Pro Super White and learned of the Toyota "Support Program" notice that was sent out recently in regards to Super White paint peeling.

I have found a nice 2019 4runner in Super White I am considering but I am hesitant buying it with this issue known.

I thought it would be a good idea to create a poll here on the forum to see how widespread this peeling paint actually is on Super White 4Runners. So please select from the poll option if you own one. If your 4runner has an issue share pics below.

Does the peeling paint result from sun damage or neglect? I plan to have the entire front end of my new 4Runner wrapped with Xpel film.

Has anyone had paint peeling on a superwhite? I don't think I've seen anyone on here with peeling paint. FWIW I have done clear bra x2 now. Removing the clear bra would probably pull any poorly adhered paint with it. So at least along those areas I'm pretty confident in the paint adhesion of mine.

For sure it's an issue on the Rav4. But they're from a different factory. I have no idea if any 4Runners have ever had this issue.

I have a superwhite Rav4, built in Japan, and I got the letter too. I think these are coming out of the same factory that's doing the 4runner (Tahara), so I don't think the 4runner is necessarily in the clear. For what it's worth, I haven't had paint peeling issues on my Rav4.

After some more research I have more or less come to the same conclusion. I have had trouble finding 4runners with this problem when searching online, but the Rav4 it seems very widespread. Thanks to all who have voted so far!!

I didn't know some ravs were still imported. I thought they were all built either in USA or Canada now.

FWIW - I probably would not buy superwhite again anyway because of the lack of clear coat. My paint is holding up fine. I bought white with the intent that it's the easiest to repair and hides damage better than any other color. But - it's really thin. Especially on the plastics that are black underneath. So any small scratch on the plastic parts tends to show pretty obviously. I kinda like all of the colors, so I don't know what I'd choose otherwise.

I've heard the same. Which is why I plan to do a full front end wrap with Xpel PPF. Maybe I should do the plastic painted arches too...

I'm opposite of you, white is the only color I really like ! Ha ha

Yeah as you can see it splits open on my hood. I imagine its thinner here and gets beat by the sun more. Obviously some are chips but a rock chip doesnt cause the slit seperation areas. My hood is riddled with them.

That doesn't look good! I think you should be first in line for a re-paint on that one. That's definitely an issue with a failed chemical bond to the primer underneath, not a rock chip problem. Bummer to see it on a 4R. That's the first I've ever heard/seen of it on a 4R.

Yeah, hopefully Toyota will take care of it for you. The way it seems to be flaking looks like it isn't just from rock chips. This is one of the first pics I've seen of the SW paint failing on a 4runner. Thanks for sharing.

Likely a failure of pretreatment or metal prep. Probably not the paint itself which has failed. Delamination of such large sections is a colossal failure. This doesnt appear to be corrosion and or filiform type corrosion due to the sheeting delamination. Base prep was off somewhere.

I've gone back and forth between Super White and Magnetic Gray, which is my current choice. Part of that choice is because I live in a high UV area.

If anyone has good info suggesting that this peeling problem has been solved for at least 2021, please reply here.

Also, I've communicated with a painter and he suggests adding a clear coat to a new car, two or three layers of Glasurit 923-550, or 923-630.
Does anyone have a feeling about this approach?
One problem I see is that it will fail eventually. At that point, it just looks like failing paint anyway.

Agree.

I have vehicles that haven’t been waxed in 15 years and the paint isn’t peeling ANYWHERE.

It is never excusable for paint to peel, nor are owners at any kind of fault.

I had the clear coat peeling on my 2005 4runner Sport Edition. Paint was fine but the clear coat wasn't.

Contacted dealer and Toyota corporate- no help from either one. I will say that the dealer was concerned enough to document it by taking pics and checking the paint depth.

I traded it in on Sept. 2020 for a TRD O/R Premium in silver metallic.

When I bought my 2020 in SuperWhite I was nervous about this. No peeling or anything yet, but I have to say it seems to chip way easier than other cars have... I'll be curious to see how it holds up long term.

My 3rd gen still had fantastic paint when I sold it last year.

Where it chips, does it expose bare metal? Or is it just the primer that's exposed?

I'd think 2020 is too young still for the peeling. Toyota claims the peeling problem with Super White and Blizzard Pearl is caused by UV penetration to the primer/metal layer. If true, then it seems to me that would take years to manifest.
